Donald J. Pease

Donald J. Pease died August 15, 2007, at the age of 72. He was born in St. Johns on January 17, 1935, the son of Gilford and Eloise (Thurston) Pease. He was an auto mechanic and a veteran of the U.S. Navy reserves. Don married Barbara Ann Haudenschield in St. Johns on November 27, 1954 and she preceded him in death on August 14, 2007.

Surviving is his daughter, Karen (William) Bond, son, Larry Pease and mother-in-law, Eva Thompson, numerous nieces and nephews, all of St. Johns. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son, Michael Pease, sister, Ellen Griffin and brothers, Raymond Pease, R.G. Pease and Dean Pease.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Chaplain Krueger officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Great Lakes Hospice or National Stroke Association.

Frank Sefl Sr.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt and Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 from 6-8 P.M. and Thursday, August 16, 2007 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Frank was born in Ashley, Michigan on May 11, 1922 the son of Tom and Rosie Bubla Sefl. He resided most of his life in Ashley, Michigan. Frank married Theresa Slamka on January 27, 1945 in Bannister, Michigan. He retired from Midland Ross in 1977 and he farmed. He had the first nuclear pace maker put in, in the mid 1970's at Ingham Medical Center. He enjoyed bingo and playing cards, tinkering and his grandchildren. Frank was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge #225, Bannister, Michigan.

He is survived by wife Theresa Sefl of Ashley, MI, 1 son Frank & Terry Sefl Jr. of Ashley, MI, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 sister Lillian Bohac of Owosso, MI. He is predeceased by his parents, 1 daughter Marcie Fabus, and 2 sisters; Rose Collins and Mary Vaysale.

Memorials may be made to ZCBJ Lodge #225 or St. Cyrils Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Michael Gregory Edward Stewart

stewart_michael.jpg (5604 bytes)Michael Gregory Edward Stewart, age 18, went to be with God in heaven on Monday, August 13, 2007, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Born January 18, 1989 in Oakland, California, Mike was the son of Edward and Tracie (Phelps) Stewart. Mike was a 2007 graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School, was a member of the swim, soccer, cross-country and tennis teams and the Air Force Reserves, and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

Mike is survived by his parents, sisters, Kaylee and Kendra and brother, Austin. Also surviving are grandparents, John and Nina Phelps of Ovid and Joseph Stewart, Sr. of Livingston, Louisiana, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Mike was preceded by his grandmother, Eunice Stewart.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 18, 2007 at the Duplain Church of Christ, 5565 E. Colony Rd., St. Johns, with Pastors Dan Cameron and Andy Goodrich officiating. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday and Friday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

John W. Luecht

John W. Luecht died August 11, 2007, at the age of 91. He was born in St. Johns on February 8, 1916, the son of William and Minna (Mohnke) Luecht. John graduated from the University of Michigan where he played the tuba in the marching band. He was a retired aeronautical engineer for Aerospace in Los Angeles, California where he was involved in the space program during the 60’s and 70’s, enjoyed driving his Cadillacs and traveling. John married his wife of 50 years, Mildred Wiegman, in Indiana in 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1990.

Surviving are his three sons, Bill Luecht of Riverside, CA, Rich (Debra) Luecht of Lakewood, CA and Bob Luecht of Morongo Valley, CA, one daughter, Kathy (Jeff) Germany of Elk Grove, CA, four grandchildren, Annie, Matt, Kelly and Garrett, all of California, one great grandson, Elijah of California and two sisters, Lois Pollock of Georgia and Martha Platt of Massachusetts.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 17, 2007 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 511 E. Sturgis St., St. Johns, MI burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor George Brinley officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hazel Findlay Country Manor.

Carol Ann (Platte) Spitzley

spitzley_carol.jpg (5589 bytes)Carol Ann (Platte) Spitzley passed away Sunday, August 12, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 61. Born on September 27, 1945 in Westphalia, MI to Cecelia Platte and the late Roman Platte. She graduated from Nazareth College and was employed as a school teacher before working in the insurance industry. She retired from Auto Owners in March 2007. She loved to crochet baby afghans for Shared Pregnancy in Lansing. Carol had a great sense of humor and a cheerful smile.

She leaves behind her loving husband and soul mate, Pete Spitzley. Surviving are her mother, Cecelia Platte; 3 brothers, David, Tom (Kathy) and Dennis (Lucy) Platte; father and mother-in-law, William R. and Therese VanWormer; Pete's family, Agnes (Larry) Cairns, Ken Jr. (Evelyn), Mike (Diane), Jim (Jill), Ray Jerry, Doug (Coreena) Spitzley, Tessy (Ron) Skiffington, Lisa (Bob) Schroeder, Ellen Siel, Billie Jo Tacey, Jeanette (John) Doll; several nieces and nephews; two special nieces, Carolyn Platte and Angie Hoffman.

The Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 16, 2:00 p.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow, Lansing with the Rev. John P. Klein officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow in Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E. Washington, DeWitt Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with the Scripture Service at 3:00 p.m. and the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to the St. Gerard Catholic Church or Shared Pregnancy, P. Ann Popoff

Funeral services will held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Monday 2-8 P.M with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.  and burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan.

Ann was born on December 16, 1913 in Bannister, Michigan, the daughter of Frank and Louise (Matousek) Goldman. She had resided most of her life in Lansing, Michigan. She had married Atanas G. (A.G.) Popoff in 1952 in Angola, Indiana. A.G. passed away in 1984 and with her husband A.G. they co-managed The Popoff Meat Company in Lansing, Michigan. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking and she loved animals. Ann was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso, Michigan.

Survivors include her step-son, Don and Metta Popoff of Lansing, Michigan, special nephew, Wendell and Ruth Goldman of Perrinton, Michigan, 2 sister in-laws, Josie Goldman of Bannister, Michigan, Wanetta Goldman of Bannister, Michigan. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, 4 sisters, Mary Hnetynka, Doris Hutra, Ida Zabalo, Olga Sedelak, 4 brothers, Frank, William, Ted and Carl Goldman.

Memorials may be made to Gratiot County Humane Society in her memory.  The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Alphirna Mary Patterson

patterson_alphirna.jpg (5168 bytes)Alphirna Mary Patterson, age 77, of Oakley, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2007, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.

She was born on April 18, 1930, in Elsie, the daughter of the late Leonard and Luella (Janes) Schmidtfranz. She married Kennard Patterson on May 29, l948. He preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 2003. She was a member of the Oakley Full Gospel Church.

Surviving are her children: Diane (Ronnie) Moore of Chesaning, Linda (William) Mayer of Brant, Larry (Lynne) Patterson of St. Johns, Douglas Patterson of Harrison, Raymond (Sandy) Patterson of Merrill, Russell (Angie) Patterson of Elsie; 14 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren, one sister, Viola Durbin of Ovid; one brother, Wayne (Ethel) Schmidtfranz of Owosso; sisters-in-law, Virginia Schmidtfranz of Owosso and Shirley Schmidtfranz of Owosso. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers Delmar, Leonard and Glen Schmidtfranz..

The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Walker-Martin Funeral Home, Chesaning. The Rev. Donald Luckhurst will officiate with burial in Fairfield Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and all day Friday.
