Elaine Dorothy Duchi
Elaine Dorothy Duchi died January 8, 2008, at the age
of 84. She was born in Saginaw on November 9, 1923, the daughter of Floyd and Dora
(Townsend) Robbennolt. She was a member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church in Bannister,
St. Cyrils Altar Society, Ashley School Parent Teachers Association and was a
volunteer for the Red Feather Cancer Drive. Elaine married Joseph Duchi in Bannister on
August 7, 1944 and he preceded her in death on November 21, 2005.
Surviving are her children, Joseph (Mary) Duchi, Jr. of Columbus, OH, Judy (Greg) Pell of
Okemos and Jeanne (Alan Nye) Blaine of Aurora, CO; two granddaughters, Jodi (Mike) Pitsch
and Jamie Harris; two grandsons, John Duchi and Andrew Duchi; two great-grandchildren,
Michaela Harris and Caden Pitsch; two sisters, Joyce Dyer of East Lansing and Lurah
Pasionek of Saginaw; two sisters-in-law, Margaret (Paul) Surdenik and Millie Duchi; and
several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Floyd
Robbennolt and Dora Robbennolt; and one sister, Jenita Hoff.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 11, 2008 at St.
Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr.
Kenneth McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at

Palmer
Celia M. Palmer died January 8, 2008, at the age of
81. She was born in Ray, North Dakota on January 30, 1926, the daughter of Charles Edwin
and Mary Ava Stella (Durkman) Reeser. She was a retired laundry worker for Ovid Healthcare
Center, loved to crochet and make dolls. Celia married Kenneth Palmer, August 13, 1945 in
Adrian, MI, and he preceded her in death May 15, 1986.
She is survived by a son, Ken (Tina) Palmer of Corunna, three daughters, Mary Stevens of
Elsie, Barbara (Gary) Miles of Johanesburg, MI and Iva Mae Palmer of Owosso, 26
grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, many great great grandchildren, sister, Rose Myers
of Wells, MN and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in
death by a son, Fred Palmer, brothers, Tillman and Chuck Reeser and special friend, Don
Smith.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Houghton Chapel of the
Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E.
Oak St., Ovid, MI burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, with David Hudgens officiating. The family
will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Ella Mae Beck
Ella Mae Beck died January 7, 2008 at the age of 98.
Born in Gratiot County on December 9, 1909, the daughter of Charles and Louisa (Hoffer)
Johnson. She received a Masters Degree from MSU and was a retired school teacher, a member
of Salem United Methodist Church, Michigan and International Reading Association, Michigan
and National Education Association, Michigan Retired Teachers Association and the Rebekah
Lodge #194 - Pompeii. Ella Mae married Maynard John Beck and he preceded her in death in
1973.
Surviving are her children, Mary Jane Larsen of Haines City, FL, John Leonard (Carolyn)
Beck of St. Johns and Donna Jean (Patrick) McCormick of Cadillac, grandchildren, Sally Jo
Sanders, Jeffrey Scott (Kindra) Beck, Michael John (Dede) Beck, Christopher Robert
(Elaine) Larsen, Todd Matthew (Amy) Oatley, Christine Noel (Dan) Maldonado and Kathy
(John) Heystek and fourteen great grandchildren.

Marcia Ellen Puhlman
Marcia Ellen Puhlman, 77, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on
Thursday, January 3, 2008 at her home.
A Memorial Mass for Marcia was held on Saturday, January 12th 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church with Father Robert Byrne and Father Douglas Osborn officiating. The family
will receive friends on Saturday, January 12th from 10 a.m. until time of service at the
church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will
be available at the church and Clark Family Funeral Chapel.
Marcia was born on October 26, 1930 in St. Johns, the daughter of Ray and Mary Ellen
(Gallagher) Osborn. She graduated from St. Johns High School. Marcia married Arthur A.
Puhlman, Jr. in February 1953. She co-owned the Clock Restaurant from 1973 until 1993 and
owned Puhlmans Gifts, Flower Petal and Silk Petal in St. Johns. Marcia was a member of
Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed cross stitch and making craft items for her
grandchildren.
Marcia is survived by her children, Cheryl Puhlman of Mt. Pleasant, Scott Puhlman of Mt.
Pleasant, David (Lee Ann) Puhlman of Mt. Pleasant, Peri (Brian) Fausett of Shepherd, Chris
Puhlman of Mt. Pleasant and Eric (Shana) Puhlman of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Melissa
Vodicka, Matthew Vodicka, Patrick Vodicka, Connor Puhlman, Ryan Fausett, Adam Fausett,
Ashley Fausett, Christopher Robinson, Justin Puhlman and Allison Puhlman; brothers, Father

"Simmy" Smith
Simon M. "Simmy" Smith, age 85, of Westphalia
passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at home with his family at his side.
He was born on January 19, 1922 in Westphalia, the son of Joseph and Eleanor (Schafer)
Smith. Simmy was a member of St. Mary's Church in Westphalia, St. Joseph Society, and the
Catholic Order of Foresters. He retired from General Motors in 1981 after 35 years of
service. He proudly served his country during WWII, serving in Europe, where he was held
as a P.O.W. He was member of the V.F.W. Post #3733 Fowler, Pewamo, Westphalia Post. On
June 18, 1947 he married Revella Hanses. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter,
Carli Smith; brothers, Clarence, Robert, Ambrose, Joseph, and Charles Smith; and sisters,
Roberta Weber and Caroline Rockey.
Surviving are his wife of 60 and 1/2 years, Revella;
children, Glenn (Marie) Smith, Sharon (Ken) Miller, Donna (Bruce) Devereaux, Judy
"Jude" (Fred) Kramer, and Amy (John) Miller; 24 grandchildren; 31
great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Leo Rockey and David (Kate) Hanses; sisters-in-law,
Kathleen (Robert) Barker, Dorothy Hattis, and Liz (Robert) Spitzley; and many nieces and
nephews.

Joseph P. Ondrus
Joseph P. Ondrus, age 88, of Middleton passed away on
Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at the Country Friends Foster Care. He was born on August 12,
1919 to John and Filomena (Lukas) Ondrus. Joe was an electrical contractor, and most all
who knew him know that he never really did retire from the profession. He married
Antoinette Wirth on May 9, 1953 in Westphalia. Joe was a member of the St. Martin DePorres
Catholic Church in Perrinton, and a member of the Carson City Knights of Columbus. He
enjoyed his morning coffee with the "gang" and had a love for the game of
baseball. Joe also loved watching his grandsons play sports and very rarely missed any
event for the last 20 years.
Joe is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Ondrus of St.
Johns and Sarah (Jeff) Stephens of Maple Rapids; 3 grandsons, Joseph, Jeremy and Matthew
Stephens; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, Toni, in 1995; and 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2008
at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church in Perrinton with Fr. Jules
Spleet officiating. Burial will be in the Maryknoll Cemetery in Carson City. Visitation
will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Dodge Funeral Home in Middleton.
Donations may be made to the church, the American Heart Association, or the American
Cancer Society.
Anna F. Malinak
Anna F. Malinak, age 95, passed away on January 3,
2008. Anna was born March 25, 1912 in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States
in 1920 and resided in Duplain Township, Elsie, MI most of her young life. Anna loved
gardening, cooking, her flower gardens, her association with the Holy Family Catholic
Church and the many enjoyable laughs and conversations with the congregation.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Vendelin; granddaughter, Karen Morrison;
sisters, Mary Sipka and Lillian Kus; and brother, Anthony Bohil. Surviving Anna are a
daughter, Eleanor (Wayne) Kline of Owosso; sons, Edward Malinak of East Lansing and
Wendell (Barbara) Malinak of Laingsburg; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 great
great grandchildren; sisters, Josephine (Jim) Kozumplik of Lennon and Agnes Fleetham of
Charlotte; many nieces and nephews. Annas family and friends will miss her smile,
laughter, inner-strength, home-cooking, and love of life. May Gods final hug be an
eternal one. We love you mom.

Matthew Jay Smrchek
Matthew Jay Smrchek died January 2, 2008, at the
age of 30. He was born in Lansing on July 28, 1977, the son of Roger and Jerri (Williams)
Smrchek. He was a C.A.D. engineer, liked fishing and muscle cars, had a great sense of
humor and a friendly smile.
Surviving is his father, Roger Smrchek of Fowler, mother, Jerri Smrchek of Lansing,
sisters, Tara (Christopher) Hartman of Eau Clair and Melanie Smrchek of Royal Oak,
grandmothers, Bessie Danek of Chesaning and Eleanor Williams of Atlanta, GA, several
aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Frank Carl
Smrchek and Edward George Williams.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, January 5, 2008, in Fowler, at the Goerge
Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes,
11112 W. Ionia, with Pastor Royce Allen officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8

Mary C. Masarik
Mary C. Masarik died January 3, 2008, at the age of
95. She was born in Illinois on May 10, 1912, the daughter of Metro and Catherine
(Zabosky) Chawanec. She was a retired bus driver, school cook and crossing guard and
member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lapeer. Mary married Rudolph Masarik in
St. Johns on September 17, 1932 and he preceded her in death in 1970.
Surviving are her children, Mary Bond of Lapeer and Rudolph W. (Florence) Masarik of St.
Johns, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 21 great great grandchildren and sisters,
Anna Hovey of Oregon and Eva Raia of University City, MO. In addition to her husband, she
was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Chawanec and sister, Helen Wasylenko.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass
