Duane Arthur Wallen

Duane Arthur Wallen age 58 of Bannister, Michigan died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Ashley Care Center, Ashley, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Duane was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 3, 1949 the son of Arthur and Marie ( Dancer ) Wallen. He resided all of his life in Bannister, Michigan and graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1968. Duane enjoyed working on cars and he liked to hunt. Duane served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

He is survived by 3 brothers; Robert and Linda Wallen of Ovid, MI, Donald and Carol Wallen of Bannister, MI, Gerald and Mary Wallen of Bannister, MI, 4 sisters; Carol and Paul Ouverson of Iowa, Marilyn and John Sopocy of Bannister, MI, twin sisters Doris and David Thompson of Lansing, MI, Pat and Rand Booth of Vermont, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, and 1 brother Larry Wallen.

Memorials may be made to Ashley Care Center Activities Department in memory of Duane. The family is being served by
Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Harold Benjamin Burnett

burnett_harold.jpg (6082 bytes)Harold Benjamin Burnett, age 89, passed away on January 20, 2008. He was born on October 7, 1918 to George and Almeda (Benjamin) Burnett. Harold was raised on a farm in Bath Township and was a survivor of the Bath School Disaster. He served as a medic in WWII, authored The History of the Bath Charter Township and organized the Bath Township National Bi-centennial celebration. After Harold retired from the State of Michigan, he and his wife made their home in Florida for thirteen years before returning to Bath to live out their lives. He was a devout Christian who loved his family and community. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, June F. Burnett, his parents, and his three brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Michelle (Don) Allen of Bath; five grandchildren: Hollie (Jeremiah) Lane, Kellie (Michael) Soper, Ivy Lynn Allen, Peter (Melissa) Allen, special granddaughter, Ondrayah Thornton; and six great-grandchildren: Abigail, Andrew and Annabelle Soper, Tyller Joy, Riley, and Noah Cantwell.

Funeral services will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 22, from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lakeside Chapel Building Fund, 5840 Park Lake Rd., P.O. Ernest Lewis Jackson

jackson_ernest.jpg (4356 bytes)Ernest Lewis Jackson, age 94, passed away January 16, 2008 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Born March 30, 1913 at Belding MI, the son of Fred and Emma (Laverty) Jackson. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns in 1931. He was a dairy farmer, maintaining a herd of registered Holstein cattle, was a past member of the Holstein Friesian Association, the Michigan Milk Producers Association, Artificial Breeders and Dairy Herd Improvement Association and member of the United Church of Ovid. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all sports-especially football. On November 10, 1936 he married Erma Josephine Reeb.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, two daughters, Sharon (Hugh) Curry of Columbia, MO and Sandra (Sie) Meadows of Gaylord, MI, one son, Frederick (Moni) Jackson of Budapest, Hungary, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy (Tom) Rasmussen.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home , 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Donald Fry officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gladys L. Mayers

mayers_gladys.jpg (4432 bytes)Gladys L. Mayers died January 16, 2008, at the age of 88. She was born in Clinton County on March 24, 1919, the daughter of Ben and Sybil (Boron) Gillison. Gladys married Raymond L. Mayers in St. Johns on August 24, 1938 and he preceded her in death on November 26, 2004. Gladys helped Raymond on the family farm, was a member of Clinton County Farm Bureau, loved to fish and play cards.

Surviving are her daughters, Marjorie (Karl) Mohnke-Lothschutz of Grand Ledge and Shirley (Carl) Stump of St. Johns; son, Keith L. Mayers of St. Johns; daughter-in-law, Esteria Mayers-Livermore of Lake Odessa; 24 grandchildren, Lynnette (Tom) Johnson, LuAnn (R. Steven) Bebee, David E. (Dawn) Mohnke, Jr., Steven (Leslie) Mohnke, Lisa (Scott) Fowler, Dean (Sherri) Stump, Carla (Dan) Eckley, Monica (Paul) Thayer, Darren Stump, Keith Mayers, Jr., Kevin Mayers, Karen (Kenny) Hanson, Adam Mayers, Maynard Mayers, Mona Lisa Mayers, Mallory Mayers, Malinda Mayers, Melanie (Nathan) Lounds, Michelle (Tony) Monsivais, Michael Mayers, Lucinda (Ryan) Smith and Lyle Mayers, Jr.; 29 great grandchildren; sister, Darthea (Paul) Hartgerink; brothers-in-law, William L. (Jean) Mayers of St. Johns and Fred (Clarabel) Mayers of Florida; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Lyle Mayers and infant son Douglas Mayers and sister, Marie Northrup.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home , burial at Mt. Rest Cemtery with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Maria Socorro Riojas Swanson

She was born in Eagle Pass, Texas on September 22, 1934, the daughter of Pedro Sanchez and Brigida (Carrizales) Riojas. She married David R. Swanson on November 28, 1982, at the First Church of God, St. Johns and he survives her.

She is also survived by her children, Jim (Wendy) Pittman, Mark (Margaret) Pittman, Laurenza (Darcy) Riojas, David (Diane) Swanson, Sally (Randy) Seifert, Russell (Gena) Swanson, Trevor Swanson, Clyde (Rosemary) Swanson, and John Swanson, daughter-in-law Kim Swanson, 29 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brothers, Isrrael (Carol) and Pedro (Sandy) Riojas, sisters, Norma Gorman and Doralicia Cordova and several nieces and nephews. Maria was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Juan and Jose Riojas.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 18, 2008, at the First Church of God, 1063 S. DeWitt Rd., St. Johns, MI, burial at Sowle Cemetery, with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home and 9:30 A.M. until the time of service on Friday at the church. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of contributions to the St. Lawrence Dialysis Unit of Sparrow Medical Centers or the First Church of God.

Ilene E. Schwark

schwark_ilene.jpg (5142 bytes)Ilene E. Schwark, of Ovid, died at home on January 16, 2008, at the age of 75, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Ovid, MI on January 6, 1933, the daughter of Fred Decker and Myrtle (Lowe) Decker Young and resided most of her life in Ovid.

Surviving are her children, Russell (Linda) Shivley of St. Johns, Robin (John) Hibbler of Fremont, Ohio and Ronald (Robin) Shivley of Ovid, step-son, David (Mari) Schwark of Ovid, step-daughter, Judy (Greg) Reginek of Ovid, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 husbands, Russell L. Shivley, Sr., Ollie “Bud” Crane and John “Jack” Schwark; 1 son, Randy Shivley; and 1 brother, Glenn Decker.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Middlebury Cemetery with Phil Beavers officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Sparrow Hospice Services.
