Henry Reginald Besko

besko_henry.jpg (4940 bytes)Henry Reginald Besko, 91, of St. Johns passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Hazel I. Findlay Manor, surrounded by his four children. Henry was a beautician, and in 1936 opened his own beauty shop in Ovid. He later was an inspector at Midland-Ross in Owosso.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Grove Bible Church, St. Johns, with Pastor Robert Prange officiating. Visitation at the church will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Henry was born in Detroit Sept. 2, 1916, the son of John and Anna (Ozvat) Besko Sr. He graduated from St. Johns High School, class of 1934. He had resided most of his life in the Ovid and St. Johns area. On Aug. 7, 1959, he married Donna Scheidt in Laingsburg. She passed away Nov. 7, 2007. Henry enjoyed bowling, golf, playing softball and cards. He was a member of Grove Bible Church, St. Johns, and the Oddfellows in Ovid.

Survivors include: three daughters, Rita Sodman of Ovid, Teala and John Moon of St. Johns and Sonya and Mark Latz of Elsie; son, Dirk and Kay Besko of St. Johns; daughter-in-law, Fran Besko of Holt; two stepsons, Monte and Dorie Sauers of Lake Odessa and Dennis and Barbara Sauers of Woodland; sister-in-law, Ludmilla “Mickey” Besko of Ovid; 28 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren, totaling 100. He was predeceased by a son, Bill Besko; son-in-law, Jack Sodman; four brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to: Heartland Hospice or wishes of the family for Hazel I. Findlay Memorial. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes.

Louie Dale Schultheiss

schultheiss_dale.jpg (4906 bytes)Louie Dale Schultheiss, 93, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 3, 2008, at Schnepp’s Health Care Center in St. Louis, Michigan. He was born February 17, 1914 in rural St. Louis, the son of Mary and Louis Schultheiss. He married Irene Howell on December 2, 1933 and celebrated their 74th anniversary this past year. He was a farmer at heart and spent his days working at Motor Wheel in Lansing while running the farm in St. Johns the remainder of his time. Taking an early retirement, he moved to Florida and lived many happy years enjoying the sunshine and working in his garden. Four years ago, he and his wife relocated back to Michigan to be close to their family. His favorite pastime was reading and he passed his love of novels on to all of his children. He was a member of the Forest Hill Church of Christ and enjoyed worshipping with the five generations of his family who attend there.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, his children, Susan (Bob) Wernick of Riverdale, Carol (Ron) Dow of Wichita, KS, and Jim (Tomi Ann) Schultheiss of St. Johns. He will be missed by his 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis, in 1968, one brother, Norman, and two sisters, Treva Ward and Mazie Terry.

Funeral services will be at the Forest Hill Church of Christ, 10015 N. Luce Rd., Alma, MI on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. John Robinson will be officiating. Visitation will be at the Osgood Funeral Home, in St. Johns on Thursday, February 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. There will also be visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Final resting place will be the Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns with graveside services for the family at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Forest Hill Church of Christ or the Cancer Society. Janet E. Hulbert

hulbert_janet.jpg (4583 bytes)Janet E. Hulbert died February 3, 2008, at the age of 75. She was born in Denver, Colorado on November 11, 1932, the daughter of Howard and Esther (Dalton) McColly. She was a retired secretary for East Lansing Schools a member of the Congregational Church and the Wildlife Federation. Janet married Bruce Hulbert in Eureka on March 26, 1983 and he preceded her in death on February 28, 1999.

Surviving are her sons, David Bruce (Juleann) Beane of Ashley and Robert Lee Beane of Atlanta, GA, step sons, Marty Hulbert and Jeff Hulbert, grandson, Christopher Paul Beane and four other grandchildren, sister, Margaret (Ronald) Rybicki of Charlevoix, sister-in-law, Lianne (Allen) Thunell of Ashley, brother-in-law, Doug (Jane) Hulbert of Ashley, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Elizabeth White and sister, Patty Schwartz.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Union Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the charity of the family’s choice.

William J. Kemp

William J. Kemp, age 79, of Laingsburg passed away on February 1, 2008 in St. Johns. He was born to William and Gladys (Dennison) Kemp on Christmas day in 1928, in Petoskey, MI. He was retired from Olofsson Corp. after 38 years. He was a member of the Michigan Wing Civil Air Patrol for 37 years and flew as a pilot on several search missions over Michigan. Bill also gave many young persons aircraft rides and introduced them to his love of flying.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia; sons, William (Vicki) Kemp, Phillip Kemp, Randy (Janet) Kemp, Michelle Kemp; cousin, Nancy Quinn; sisters, Lillian Miller of Barryton, Maxine (Chuck) Hooker of Charlevoix; brother, Frank (Betty) Kemp of Gaylord; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Seldon, Evelyn Lambert, Mary Lou Kemp; and son, Christopher Kemp.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Laingsburg with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating. Family will meet with friends on Friday, February 8th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Reed Cemetery. Paddy Lou Keener

keener_paddy.jpg (5693 bytes)Paddy Lou Keener died February 1, 2008 at the age of 71. She was born in Lansing, on November 19, 1936, the daughter of William and Murel (Conklin) Haven. She was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church and the Extension Club. Paddy married Jeter R. Keener on March 19, 1955 and he preceded her in death on July 17, 2002. She was a homemaker who loved travelling whether to a specific destination or just for long drives in the country to watch deer. She also loved going out to eat and camping.

Paddy is survived by her children, Michelle Lee (Wayne) Cox of Owosso, Melody Ann (Roger) Marek-Jones of Ovid, Michael William Keener of St. Johns and Mark Carl Keener, of St. Johns; 9 grandchildren, Wayne Thomas(fiance Clara) Cox, Tami Rechelle Huntoon, Kenneth Edwin Cox, Robert Joseph Marek, Douglas Reynolds (fiance, Jamie) Marek, Heidi Jo Marek, Hillary Jones, Kara Jones, and Matthew Jones, and 15 great grandchildren, Natasha Renee Cox, Cody Dean Cox, Brooklyn Rechelle Huntoon, Kiley Michelle Rose Huntoon, Kaiden Oliver Keiffer, Saige Elaine Keiffer, Jacob Pease, Ryan Pease, Blake Pease, Brianna Pease, Dylan Wayne Cox, Isabelle Simpson, Gavin Janson Jones, Jaeley Jones and Talon Jones. In addition to Jeter, Paddy was preceded in death by one grandson, Benson Robert Cox, 2 step-sisters, Luelta McBride and Dorothy Kessler, and her step-brother, William Haven.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI. with Rev. Kenneth J. Bremer officiating. Burial will take place at South Bingham Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Margarette Bernice Halsted

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel St. Johns, MI on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Jon Pohl will officiate with burial at South Bingham Township Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and Friday, February 1, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Margarette was born in St. Johns, Michigan on November 4, 1923 the daughter of Arthur and Helen ( Hunt ) Salters. She resided most of her life in Lansing before moving to St. Johns in 1987. She attended St. Johns Schools. Margarette married Frank D. Halsted on April 23, 1949 in Maple Rapids, Michigan. She worked for Oldsmobile during the war and then worked for Seal Powers in St. Johns after that. Margarette loved to play cards, dance, and make flower arrangements. She enjoyed spending time with her kids and going camping with her family, and she liked going shopping. Margarette was a member of Greenbush Methodist Church and she volunteered for Meals on Wheels with her husband Frank.

She is survived by her husband Frank D. Halsted of St. Johns, MI, children; Margaret Jean and Jim Wicker of Midland, MI, Joseph Dan and Sue Halsted of Charlotte, MI, Connie and Mike Rogers of Dimondale, MI, grandchildren; Carla and Dave Eno, Kelly and Shaun Larabee, David Rogers, Kory Halsted, Kacie Halsted, 5 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Lena and Art Hertzberger, Betty Blemaster, 3 brothers; Donald and Kate Salters, Clare Salters, Leon and Linda Salters, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, and 3 brothers; Stewart, Lawrence, and Robert.
