Kenneth E. McNinch

Kenneth E. McNinch died February 11, 2008, at the age of 68. He was born in Carson City, MI the son of Glen and Dorothy (Prichard) McNinch. He attended the Pentecostal Church and was a retired sawmill employee.

Surviving are his sisters, Donna (Gary) Montique of Flint, Gerry (Steve) Kern of Grand Rapids, Helen (Cecil) Bailey of Washington, Judy Sanchez of Alabama, Cathy (Dennis) Bigelow of Alma and Eva McNinch of Texas, brothers, Arthur (Patty) McNinch of Houghton Lake, Gary McNinch of Alma, Robert McNinch of Florida, David (Deb) McNinch of Alma and Randy McNinch of Edmore. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Martha Johnston and Mary Francis, and brothers, Russell McNinch, Junior McNinch and Dennis McNinch.

The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 509 E. Main St., Maple Rapids. There will be no service.

Dorothy M. Dunlap

dunlop_dorothy.jpg (4259 bytes)Dorothy M. Dunlap died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at the age of 97. She was born June 8, 1910 in Rutland Township, Barry County, Michigan the daughter of C. Butler and Elnora (Bronson) Smith. Dorothy was a retired chief operator from Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She was a member of the Michigan Bell Retirees, Past President of the Hastings American Legion Auxiliary, member of the Ladies of the Moose, and a former volunteer for the Barry County election board and Pennock Hospital. On November 28, 1934 she married William Dunlap and he preceded her in death in 1990. She also was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and Wayne and one sister, Esther Pratt.

Surviving are nieces, Mary Lou Roth of Hastings, Nancy (Larry) Moeggenberg of St. Johns, Candace (John) Ammarman of Mason, Peri-Anne (William) Warstler of Florida.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422. Interment will take place at 3:00 pm in Riverside Cemetery, Hastings. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior the funeral on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, 865 S. Cedar, Mason, MI 48854.

Coral M. Howe

howe_coral.jpg (4234 bytes)Coral M. Howe died Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at the age of 95. She was born January 14, 1913 in Bath, Michigan the daughter of Charles and Ella (Makley) Hobart. She was a graduate of Bath High School and County Normal and taught in rural schools, primarily the Chapman and Reed. Coral was a survivor of the 1927 Bath School Disaster, attended Bath Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. On September 17, 1938 she married Russell Howe and he preceded her in death.

Surviving is one daughter, Edith (Randall) Young of Laingsburg; one son, Eugene (Sue) Howe of Elsie; grandchildren, Eugene M. Howe, Tammy (Randy) Ingalls, Kevin (Carol) Young, Shelli (Jock) Young, Scott (Theresa) Young; 16 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; special friends, Butch and Shirley Powers. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Minnick, Maria Martinico and Ovid Healthcare Center for the wonderful care given to Coral the past few years.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Friday, February 15, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ovid Healthcare Center 9480 E. M-21, Ovid, MI 48866.

Kathleen Barkhuff

barkhuff_kathleen.jpg (4918 bytes)Kathleen Barkhuff age 78 of St. Johns, Michigan formerly of Grand Rapids, MI died January 17, 2008 at Ashley Care Center, Ashley, Michigan.

Memorial Services will be held at Unity of Greater Lansing Lansing, MI on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Richard Ammons will officiate.

Kathleen was born in Flint, Michigan on January 4, 1930 the daughter of Clyde Earl and Anna Catherine ( Pascholl ) Ryther. She resided most of her life in Flint, St. Johns, Grand Rapids, and Ashley, Michigan. Kathleen was a sewing teacher, and she worked at Wal-Mart. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Kathleen was a member of Unity of Greater Lansing.

She is survived by her children; Michael Barkhuff of Oregon, Debra and Fred Korcal of Grand Rapids, MI, Jeffrey Barkhuff of Byron Center, MI, James and Denise Barkhuff of White Cloud, MI, Susan and Al Sodman of Elsie, MI, Laura and Toom Rubley of St. Johns, MI, 17 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and brother Gordon Ryther of Alabama. She is predeceased by her parents, grandson Matthew, and siblings; Joan, Carl, Tommy, David, Theresa, and Joyce.

Memorials may be made to Lewybody Dementia Association, Atlanta, GA or to the Macular Degeneration Center Fund Casey Eye Institute Portland, OR. The family is being served by
Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Orrin D. Sutfin

sutfin_orrin.jpg (4973 bytes)Orrin D. Sutfin passed away February 11, 2008 at Ovid Healthcare at the age of 87. He was born December 25, 1920 the son of Ray and Blanche (Richards) Sutfin and lived in Clinton County all of his life. He was a member of Eureka Christian Church and worked at B.O.C. in Lansing as well as farming.

He is survived by one sister, Helen Parke of Georgia, one brother, Cecil (Betty) Sutfin of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Orrin was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Ralph, Eugene, and Louis Sutfin and one sister, Ethel Peterson.

Funeral Service will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI, with Pastor Keith Whipple officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to Ovid Healthcare Center, the American Heart Association, or Eureka Christian Church.

Carl B. Carlson

carlson_carl.jpg (4494 bytes)Carl B. Carlson died February 11, 2008, at the age of 54. He was born in Rhode Island on April 22, 1953, the son of LeVona Wright. He was a retired General Motors employee and member of U.A.W. Local 652 and the National Rifle Association. Carl married Jane Garcia in St. Johns on March 24, 1986 and she survives him.

Also surviving are five daughters, Theresa (Steven) Wagner of St. Johns, Renee (Andrew) Wagner of Grand Ledge, Melinda Carlson of St. Johns, Karla Hansen and Andrea Hansen, both of Lansing, one step son, Ben Molina of St. Johns, one step daughter, Suprina Molina of St. Johns, six grandchildren, Kennedielynne, Althea, Alex, Antonio, Chase and MaKhyra, one brother, Ric Carlson and two sisters, Sharon (Dale) VanAcker and Wanda (Larry) Howell. He was preceded in by his mother, LeVona Conklin.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a vigil service 7 P.M. Wednesday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of contributions to his family.

Joyce V. Babcock

Joyce V. Babcock died February 10, 2008, at the age of 76. Born in Middlebury Township, Michigan on February 18, 1931, she was the daughter of Ashley J. and Vera Mae (Varco) Vincent. She was retired from the Teachers Retirement Section of the Department of Management and Budget. Joyce married Donald G. Babcock on April 6, 1951.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Donald Babcock of Dimondale, daughter, Luann Babcock of Grand Ledge, two sons, Duane Babcock of Potterville and Tim (Marcy) Babcock of Charlotte, son-in-law, Richard Volz of DeWitt, six grandchildren, Kyle (Jennifer) Volz, Stacy Volz, Mitchel, Andrew, Kimberly, and Candice Babcock, three great-grandchildren, Kody, Ryder, and Taylor, brothers, Richard (Wanda) Vincent of West Branch and Leroy Vincent of Ovid, sister, Margaret (Harold) Morence of Laingsburg and sisters-in-law, Mary Vincent and Mae Vincent. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Linda Volz, brothers, Leon Vincent and Lynwood Vincent.

There will be no funeral services or visitation as her wishes were to be cremated. Memorials may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, 2675 S. Cochran Rd., Charlotte, MI 48813. Arrangements by the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, MI.

Anna Mary Devereaux

devereaux_anna1.jpg (4406 bytes)Anna Mary Devereaux died February 8, 2008 at the age of 92. She was born in Duplain Township on May 26, 1915 the daughter of Martin and Agnes (Porenski) Kapral. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Anna worked as a registered nurse at Clinton Memorial Hospital. She married Rodney Devereaux on October 24, 1952 and he preceded her in death on August 6, 1989.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Fitzpatrick and Susan Teidt, and three brothers, Joseph, John, and Paul Kapral.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, with Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday 6:00 - 8:00p.m. and Monday 2:00 - 4:00p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home.  A vigil service will be held on Monday at 7:00p.m. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Helen Lucile Pierce

Helen Lucile Pierce, age 93, passed away February 7, 2008 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. She was born on September 20, 1914 in Bay City, Michigan. Her parents were Harvey and Ada (Western) Davis. She was married to Walter H. Pierce and he preceded her in death in 1990. Helen and Walter came to St. Johns in 1940 and opened Pierce Bakery and operated the business for 20 years. They sold the bakery to their son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Barbara Pierce. They lived most of their retirement years in Mio, Michigan and later years in Lansing, Michigan. Helen lived 3 years with her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ben Swanchara. She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors are her son Walter S. (Barbara) Pierce and daughter Jane (Ben) Swanchara of St. Johns, MI; grandchildren Carol Ann (Bruce) Warren of East Leroy, MI, Gerald Penix and Jeanette Britanyak of Battle Creek, MI, Theresa (Phillip) Dadow of Ceresco, MI, Marcia Snyder of Woodburn, Indiana, Eugene (Becky) Pierce of Birch Run, MI, Bonnie (Richard) Schank of Roscommon, MI, Ben (Kim) Swanchara of St. Johns, MI; 16 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Helen was predeceased by her parents, two brothers Alfred and Homer Davis; daughter and son-in-law Betty and John Bennett; and grandson Michael Swanchara.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns, MI with Rev. David Hudgens officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns, Michigan.
