Kenneth L. Simon

simon_kenneth.jpg (4305 bytes)Kenneth L. Simon died March 18, 2008, at the age of 70. He was born in St. Johns on May 14, 1937, the son of Gilbert and Marie (Sontag) Simon. He was the owner/operator of Simon’s Planing Mill, Inc. in Fowler for 42 years, a veteran of the Army National Guard, a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Kenneth married Janet Knoop in Westphalia on October 3, 1959 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his daughters, Judy (David) Schulte, Sharon (Noel) Todter, Denise (Bill) Buckley, Darlene (Tim) Miller, Cheryl (Brian) Veltman and Jennifer (Brett) Stump, sons, Robert (Jill) Simon, Daniel (Beth) Simon, Steven Simon, Donald (Julie) Simon, Mark Simon, Gary (Heather) Simon and Glenn (Sarah) Simon, 19 grandchildren, 6 brothers and 4 sisters, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Simon and two sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 24, 2008 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler, with rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust Fund.

Alvina E. Bast

Alvina (AL) Ella Bast (Zimmerman) of Apache Junction, AZ Formerly of Saint Johns, MI went to be with her Lord on March 6, 2008 at the age of 79. She was born on November 3, 1928 in Lansing, MI. Alvina Ella Bast was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She loved life and wasn't afraid to try new things like parasailing. She enjoyed family and friends and welcomed all her children’s' friends into her home. She never met a stranger; they were always a friend. She will always be in our hearts, and the memories she left will be there forever.

Surviving are her loving children: Danny (Janet) Foland of Apache Junction, AZ, Lonnie Powell of Reno, NV, Penny (Eugene) McClung of Lawton, OK, Wayne(Connie) Bast of Tucson, AZ, Gary (Teresa) Bast of Pompeii, Marcia ( Ray) Emig of The Dalles, OR; sister, Charlene (Roger) Hall of Pewamo; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren with the 9th great-grandchild expected in April; 8 nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews; as well as several other extended family members. She was preceded in death by father, Floyd J. Pecktil, mother, Eva Marion Pecktil, and sister, Dorann Marion Todoran (Pecktil).

Honoring our mother's wishes there will be no memorial service. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the American Lung Assoc., or the American Heart Assoc. in memory of our mother, Alvina E. Bast. Arrangements were by Allen Funeral Home & Arizona Cremation, 1130 S. Horne, Mesa, AZ.

Donald Lee Batora

batora_donald.jpg (4793 bytes)Donald Lee Batora age 49 of Bannister, Michigan died March 17, 2008 at Mid-Michigan Hospice House in Lansing, Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan on Thursday, March 20, 2007 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening 6-8 P.M. and Wednesday 2-8 P.M. with the family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Donald was born in St. Johns, Michigan on October 8, 1958 the son of Joseph and Pauline J. (Herrick) Batora. He resided most of his life in Bannister, Texas and New Mexico. Donald had graduated from Ovid - Elsie High School with the class of 1978.  He drove truck for D&M Transport Company in Owosso and enjoyed hunting and fishing and riding motorcycles.

Donald is survived by two sons: Daniel Batora of Detroit, Michigan, Nicholas Batora of Lansing, Michigan, a daughter: Jessie Batora of Holland, Michigan, parents: Joseph and Pauline Batora of Bannister, Michigan, three sisters, Nancy and Mark Messinger of Indiana, Catherine Batora and Douglas Haubert of New Hampshire, Betty and Tom Stone of Dewitt, Michigan, three brothers: Thomas and Corinna Batora of Elsie, Michigan, David and Robin Batora of Elsie, Michigan, Robert Batora and Christine Bielski of Dewitt, Michigan, many nieces and nephews:, special friend, Betty Friday of Bannister.

Memorials may be made to Mid-Michigan Hospice House, Lansing, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Margaret M. Gurski

gurski_margaret.jpg (4204 bytes)Margaret M. Gurski died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the age of 82. She was born March 24, 1925 in St. Johns, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Kandle) Hopko and lived all her life in the St. Johns area. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Margaret was a retired head cashier at the St. Johns Kroger Store with 34 1/2 years of service. On July 26, 1947 she married Stanley Gurski and he preceded her in death on January 16, 1981. She was also predeceased by one brother, Joe Hopko. Her family was extremely important to her, especially her children and her precious grand and great grandchildren.

Surviving are two sons, James (Wanda) and Ed (Kelley) Gurski all of St. Johns; grandchildren, James Gurski II, Brad (Karla) Gurski, Bailey Gurski, Monica Womack, Debi (Bill) Price, Bessie (Chris) Whitford; great grandchildren, Will, Sadie, Bonham, Brendan and Tryston; three sisters, Mary Ewing and Helen Glaiser both of St. Johns, Betty (Larry) St. Pierre of Clearwater, FL; two brothers, John (Marlene) Hopko of St. Johns and Stephen (Alexandria) Hopko of Frederick, MD.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to Clinton Memorial Hospital Nursing Scholarship Program.

Anthony J. “Tony” Schneider

schneider_anthony.jpg (4565 bytes)Anthony J. “Tony” Schneider died March 15, 2008, at the age of 93. He was born in Fowler on December 26, 1914 the son of Joseph and Antoinette (Rademacher) Schneider. He was a retired sheet metal worker and member of the Knights of Columbus. Tony married Beverly Martin and she preceded him in death on April 22, 2006. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Tony is survived by his sisters, Rita Carrow, Therese Johnson and Lorraine Fitzpatrick, his brothers, William (Belva) Schneider and Herman Schneider, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to Beverly he was preceded in death by his son Charles, his sisters, Mary, Rose, Sister Bernardis and Esther, and his brothers John and Edward.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 10:00a.m. with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 4:00p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00p.m. on Monday at the Osgood Funeral Hom, St. Johns. A vigil service will be held at 7:00p.m Monday at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to the Knights of Columbus Council #3281, St. Johns.

Alice M. Jumper 

jumper_alice.jpg (4398 bytes)Alice M. Jumper died March 13, 2008, at the age of 101. She was born in Bingham Township on September 21, 1906, the daughter of Orin H. and Pearl A. (Simpson) Jumper and lived all of her life in the St. Johns area. She was a retired school teacher, a member of M.A.R.S.P. and the Clinton County Genealogy Society, and was a volunteer with Briggs Public Library.

Surviving are her nieces, Lucinda (Nicholas) Dunay of Ovid, Dawn (David) Boechler of Laingsburg, Alberta MacDonald of Alma and Christine Rademacher of St. Johns, sister-in-law, Irene Jumper, two great nephews, three great nieces, one great great niece and two great great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Stanley and Lawrence Jumper.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at South Ovid Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Clinton Memorial Hospital or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor Nursing Education Fund.

Doris M. Leland

leland_doris.jpg (5071 bytes)Doris M. Leland, 82 died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Clinton Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Doris was born on April 3, 1925 in Shiawassee County the daughter of Frank and Florence (Rathbun) Carter. Doris was a homemaker. On June 8, 1945 she married Ralph B. (Blackie) Leland in Owosso, MI. He died on Jan. 27, 1989. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church in Ovid, enjoyed cooking, gardening and long rides with Blackie. She is survived by three daughters, Carol and Joe Coleman of Ovid, Nancy Leland and Harlan Schrock of Portales, New Mexico, and Betty and John Luchenbill of Ovid; a son James Leland and Latisha Hicks of Eureka; step-daughter, Linda Farrell of Grayling, MI; 7 Grandchildren, Rob Farrell, Rebecca Coleman, David Coleman, Jill Chambers, James Herron, Katrina Johnson and Michael Nethaway; Great grandchildren, Jacob and Madelyn Hofacker and Aurora Herron; a brother, Ed and Kate Carter of Lansing; sister, Neva and Dick Waldo of Luther, MI; Sister-in law, Ruby Carter of Cummings, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Earl Eugene and Robert.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns (989-224-4422) on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Scott Seelhoff officiating, with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be given to Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Nellie Pearl Nobis

She was born July 27, 1929 in Lebanon Township, Clinton County, Michigan the daughter of Charles and Angie (Allen) Sillman. She was a graduate of Fowler High School, a member of the Lebanon Ladies Aide. Nellie was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fowler. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Ladies Aide, a former Sunday school teacher and choir member and participated in many other church activities. On July 3, 1949 she married Walter G. (Bud) Nobis and together they worked on their farm and Nellie was a superb homemaker. Bud preceded her in death on April 29, 1991. She was also predeceased by five brothers, Elden, Bruce, Barry, Clarence and Stuart Sillman and two sisters, Catherine Sehlke and Imogene Sillman.

Surviving is one son, Steven (Jane) Nobis of Fowler; three daughters, Cynthia Hilton of Midland, TX, Bonnie Nobis of Fowler and Melissa (Andrew) Faull of Grand Ledge; ten granddaughters, Kelly Nobis and husband Daniel Montgomery of Washington D.C., Kami (Neil) Swenson of Plymouth, MI, Stephanie (Sean) Dush of St. Johns, Danielle (Kirk) Platte of Grand Rapids, Jessica (Donald) Diaz and Megan (Joel) Shultz all of Midland, TX, Vicki (Ryan) O’Rourke, Amie and Samantha Weber all of Fowler and Andrea Weber of Lansing; eight great grandchildren; four brothers, Orville Sillman of Blissfield, Keith (Marge) Sillman of New Era, Evart (Bernita) Sillman of DeWitt, Vern Sillman of Mason; four sisters-in-law, Kay Sillman of Fowler, Gladys Johnston, Lorina and Lois Sillman all of St. Johns, one brother-in-law, Lester (Dorothy) Sehlke of Fowler.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 N. Sorrell, Fowler with Pastor Paul Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422.
