Margaret E. Burke, 90 former owner/operator of Burkewood Motel died March 25, 2008.

Carl C. Fredrickson

fredrickson_carl.jpg (5512 bytes)Carl C. Fredrickson died March 26, 2008, at the age of 98. Born January 21, 1910 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Gust and Sophia (Anderson) Fredrickson. He was a 1928 graduate of Denfeld High School. Carl married Elsie V. Peterson in Duluth on September 3, 1938 and she survives him. He was an accountant at Stoner-Dean-Wells Wholesale Grocery until 1940. From 1940 until 1947 he was the IBM Machine Operator for the St. Louis Co. Welfare Boards. He was the assistant treasurer at Chun King from 1947 until they were bought out by R. J. Reynolds. He then moved to North Carolina and was the Credit Manager of the food division at RJR for 9 ½ years. He retired in 1975 and returned to Duluth. They moved to St. Johns, Michigan in May 2001 residing at Clinton Commons for 3 1/2 years and then residing with their daughter and son-in-law for the last 3 1/2 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity since 1951 where he had served on the church council, the finance committee, as the church’s assistant treasurer and as an usher. He was also a member of the XYZ’s at Holy Trinity.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Elsie, son, James (Linda) Fredrickson of Austin, Texas, daughter, Carol (Lloyd) Schautz of St. Johns, three grandchildren, Kate Fredrickson of Austin, Texas, Lori Robertson of Morrice, Michigan, Michael (Mayuri) Hogan of Eagle, Michigan and six great grandchildren, Bryce, Jordan, Chelsea, Zachary, Alyssa and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Warren and grandparents, his mother having passed away when he was five years old, he had been raised by his maternal grandparents.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Jon Pohl officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in his memory to Greenbush United Methodist Church where he attended since moving to Michigan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, MI on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 3-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. A Scripture Service will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 7:00 P.M.

Anna was born in Bannister, Michigan on November 3, 1921 the daughter of George and Elizabeth ( Konicek ) Blahut. She resided most of her life in Bannister and Elsie, MI and attended Bannister Schools. Anna married Joseph Tomasik Sr. on January 21, 1939 in Bannister, Michigan. He died on April 8, 1991. She worked for Ovid/Elsie Schools in food service. She was the first child to be baptized in St. Cyrils Catholic Church. She was an avid bingo and card player. She enjoyed dances and music, especially polka. Anna's family would like to thank the Ovid Healthcare Center for their wonderful care of Anna over the years. Anna was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan as well as the Altar Society, ZCBJ Lodge #225, and Jenota Lodge.

She is survived by her children; Joan Vacik of Freeland, MI, Joseph and Sue Tomasik of Ovid, MI, 3 grandchildren; Carol and Kevin Mayer of Montrose, MI, Karl and Lauri Vacik of Saginaw, MI, Kirk and Elise Marrison of East Lansing, MI, 3 great grandchildren; URyan, Grant, and Cameron, sister in-law Ellen Tomasek of Owosso, MI and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, son-in-law Clarence Vacik and sister Mary Gregor.
