Richard M. Rutter
Richard M. Rutter died April 12, 2008, at the age of 83. He was born in Lansing on
September 26, 1924, the son of Richard F. and Gladys (Bacchus) Rutter. He was retired Head
Custodian for the St. Johns Public Schools and a veteran of the Merchant Marines. He was a
member of First United Methodist Church in St. Johns. Richard married Esther Jane Roberts
at the First United Methodist Church on February 14, 1948 and she survives him. He is also
survived by his sons, Robert (Lorie) Rutter of Lansing and Bruce (Donna) Rutter of St.
Johns, 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Norman Rutter of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Rutter and his sister, Nancy Lee Rutter.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns,
burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Reverend Lori Sykes officiating. The family will receive
friends Monday 2 4 PM and 6 8 PM at the funeral home. Sympathy may be

Anna Mae Joslyn Walker, Caro, formerly of Dewitt and St.
Johns was born into eternal life on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the Tuscola County
Medical Care Facility in Caro, at the age of 94. Anna Mae was born May 26, 1913 in DeWitt,
the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Schafer) Reed. Anna graduated from St.
Marys High School in Lansing with the class of 1931. She was united in marriage to
John R. (Jack) Joslyn in 1933 and the couple co-owned Jacks Country Market in St.
Johns. Jack preceded Anna in death in 1956. After Jacks death, Anna was employed for
several years at Federal-Mogul Corporation in St. Johns. In 1962, Anna married Jack Allen
Walker. He preceded her in death after 20 years of marriage, in 1982. Anna was a longtime
active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. She lived a very active life and
enjoyed golfing, playing cards, bowling and hosting family gatherings. She was a founding
member of the Ladys Green Tea Club in St. Johns, a past president, secretary and
treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary in St. Johns.
Anna is survived by four sons and their spouses, Ronald and
Jan Joslyn of Onekama, MI, James Thomas and Sharna Joslyn of Newcastle, Australia, Patrick
and Judy Joslyn of Caro, John Joslyn of Honor, MI. Anna will forever be known as
Grambo to her 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are
one brother and his wife, Willard and Joyce Reed of DeWitt and one sister, Mary Savage
Woodward of DeWitt and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands,
Anna was preceded in death by an infant son, Keith Joslyn in 1934; one granddaughter,
Susan Joslyn in 1990; three brothers and one sister, Kenneth Reed, Donald Reed, Gerald
Reed and Helen (Reed) Spayde. Anna was a loving, caring woman who was loved by all and she
will be sorely missed by the hundreds of lives that she touched. We all thank God for
sharing her with us for nearly 95 years.
The Joslyn family has honored Annas request and
cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass is being planned for a later date at St. Joseph
Catholic Church in St. Johns, with burial in the DeWitt Cemetery in DeWitt, MI. Memorials
may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family was assisted with these arrangements

Viola "Vi" Ilene
Durbin age 68 of Ovid, Michigan died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Clinton Memorial
Hospital, St. Johns, Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Larry Smith will officiate with burial at
Fairfield Township Cemetery Fairfield Twp., Michigan. Visitation will be held on Monday,
April 14, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.
Viola was born in Fairfield Township, Michigan on February 7, 1940 the daughter of Leonard
and Luella (Janes) Schmidtfranz. She resided most of her life in Ovid, Michigan and
graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1958. Viola retired from Thoracic
Cardiovascular Institute. She has also worked for Universal Electric in Owosso and for the
insurance billing department at Memorial Healthcare in Owosso. She enjoyed bowling and
traveling. Viola attended Grove Bible Church, St. Johns, MI. She served for 3 years in the
U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1966 - 1969.
She is survived by her daughter Lonna and Giles Thelen of Haslett, MI, grandson Cody
Thelen, brother Wayne and Ethel Schmidtfranz of Owosso, MI, and 2 sisters-in-law; Virginia
Schmidtfranz of Owosso, MI, Shirley Schmidtfranz of Owosso, MI. She is predeceased by her
parents, daughter Donna Durbin, 3 brothers; Delmar Janes, Wesley Schmidtfranz, Glen
Schmidtfranz, and 1 sister Alphirna Patterson.
Memorials may be made to Capital Area Humane Society. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie
Chapel.
Odelia D. Thelen
Odelia D. Thelen went to her eternal rest on April
12, 2008 at the age of 87. She was born in Riley Twp. on July 2, 1920 the daughter of
Joseph and Elizabeth (Thelen) Fedewa. Odelia lived with a deep faith in God and was a
loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was hard working, generous of heart, loved to
cook, and we cherish the quilts and afghans she made for us. She was a member of Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church and former President of both the Christian Mothers Association and
Daughters of Isabella. Odelia married Gerald Thelen on June 7, 1944.
She is survived by one daughter, Gerrie (John) Dixon, three sons, Bill (Laurie) Thelen,
George (Linda Hart) Thelen and Fr. Fred Thelen and daughter-in-law, Pat Thelen. Odelia is
also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Thelen, Alana Thelen, Paul Thelen, Gina Dixon
and Amber Dixon; foster daughter, Kathy (Bob) Miller and their children, Rob, Lauren and
Allison and foster daughter Sue Irrer. Also surviving are sisters, Bernita Vitek, Margaret
(Clair) Thelen and Sr. Joanne Fedewa, brothers: Leo Fedewa, Fr. Sylvester Fedewa, Fr.
Matthew Fedewa, James (Mary Ann) Fedewa and Joseph (Janice) Fedewa and many nieces and
nephews. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by son, Lester Thelen, foster
son, Joe Smith, sisters, Mary (Joe) Smith, Catherine (John) VanAcker and sister-in-law,
Alberta Fedewa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30A.M. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler, burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9
P.M. on Sunday and 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. on Monday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Vigil
Service 8 P.M. on Sunday and Rosary Services will be 3 P.M. and 8 P.M. Monday.
Nelda Joyce Beard
Nelda Joyce Beard, age 77,
of Elsie passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Beard retired from
Midwest Abrasive in Owosso after 20 years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie
Chapel, with Pastor Bob Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie.
Visitation at the funeral home will be today from 2 to 8 p.m.
Nelda was born July 27, 1930, in Sacramento, Ky., the daughter of Solomon and Myrtle
(Hornback) Lee. She graduated from Sacramento High School in Kentucky, and had resided
most of her life in Elsie. On July 17, 1969, she married Alvin Beard in Elsie. She loved
reading and going to the Elsie Library which she supported. Nelda loved gardening and
flowers. Her children and grandchildren were very important to her. She also loved going
to the family cottage. Nelda was a member of Elsie Literary Club, and helped with the
cookie and candy walks.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin Beard of Elsie; daughter, Sherry (Latham) and Gary
Thompson of Flint; son, Terry and Karen Latham of Calvert City, Ky.; daughter, Marcia
(Latham) and Brad Parker of Grant, Mich.; son, Allen Beard of Ovid; daughter, Pamela
(Beard) Heckman of Owosso; grandson, Matthew and Lauren Thompson, granddaughter, Melissa
Thompson, granddaughter, Jennifer (Latham) and Jon Ehlen, granddaughter, Kylie Latham,
grandson, David Latham, granddaughter, Kacy (Parker) and Luis Vega, grandson, Adam Parker,
granddaughter, Karen (Beard) Hernandez, granddaughter, May Beard, granddaughter, Holly
Heckman, granddaughter, Venus Heckman; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Ernestine Ellis
of Tucson, Ariz.; brother Truman and his wife Artie Lee of Holland, Mich.; and special
friend Sidney Shank of Paw Paw. She was predeceased by: her parents; son, Michael Latham;
four brothers; and three sisters.
