Leon H. Schafer

schafer_leon.jpg (4526 bytes)Leon H. Schafer, 67 died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Carson City Hospital following a battle with cancer. Leon was born Sept. 8, 1940 in Westphalia, MI the son of Louis J. and Matilda (Schlicht) Schafer. Leon had worked for Body Cote in Lansing, retiring in 2006. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. On April 19, 1969 he married Donna M. Wirth in Westphalia. Leon was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Post 3733, sang with the Clintonaires for 13 years, loved to tinker and drive his golf cart with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; a son, Kevin and Vicki Schafer of St. Johns, MI and 2 grandchildren, Madilyn and Camille; brothers and sisters, Sister Pauline Schafer of Chicago, Sister Caroline Schafer of Wilmette, IL, Louis A. (Jean) Schafer of Fowler, Irene (Robert) Ayles of Fowler, Helen (Ted) Thelen of Fowler, Julia Schueller of Fowler, Julius (Betty) Schafer of Fowler, Mary (David) Antes of Pewamo. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, 1 sister and 2 brothers in law.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 3, 2008 with Fr. Dennis Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422 on Thursday evening, 6-8 P.M. and Friday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A Rosary will be prayed Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. and 3:00 and 7:00 P.M. Friday. Memorials may be made to Sparrow Hospice or Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust Fund.

Ann Bendt

Ann Bendt, 64 died Monday, April 28, 2008 in Grand Rapids following a long illness with lung disease. Ann was born June 29, 1943 in Bury, England the daughter of Roy and Ivy (Bridge) Horsley. She was a graduate from Ovid-Elsie and on December 23, 1960 she married Donald Bendt in Saranac, MI.
Ann loved gardening, raised Holstein calves, cooking, baking and going to Memphis TN for her love of Elvis.

She is survived by husband Donald, daughter Donna and Cayle Reha of Elsie, son Dean and Kristy Bendt of St. Johns, 5 grandchildren, C. J. Reha, Kirtis Reha, Rebecca Bendt, Isabel Bendt and Ashley Johnson, Mother Ivy Horsley, brothers Keith and Marion Horsley of Ovid, Terry Horsley of Belding, Kevin and Sue Horsley of Lowell, sisters June and Dwight Sieler of Saranac, Jane and Ken Jack of Belding, Susan and Charles McRoberts of Belding and Lynne and Jerry Osborne of Greenville, sister in law, Robin and Jay Barnhardt of Alto, MI.  She was preceded in death by her father, sister Betty and brother Michael.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jerry Drummond officiating. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, 6-8 P.M. and on Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.
