Gaylord W. Ernst Gaylord W. Ernst died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the age of 80. He was born May 21, 1927 in Essex Township, Clinton County, Michigan the son of William and Florence (Sorrell) Ernst. Gaylord enjoyed hunting, especially turkey hunting, salmon fishing and spending time at his cabin near Leota, Michigan. He was a retired truck driver. Surviving are two daughters, Christine (Marvin) Helmer of DeWitt and Cheryl White of St. Johns; four grandchildren, Vicki (Rick) Theis and Douglas Helmer all of DeWitt, Heather (Alex) Derian of Williamston and Amber Lawrence of St. Johns; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Ernst of St. Johns; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister-in-law, LaVern and Katie Ernst. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. in East Plains Cemetery near Matherton, Michigan. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 260, St. Johns, MI 48879. Martha Jean Daniel age 60 of Ovid, Michigan died May 16, 2008 at at her home in Ovid, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Dan Cameron will officiate with burial at South Ovid Cemetery Ovid Township, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. and Monday, May 19, 2008, from 2-8 p.m. with the family present 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Martha was born in Traverse City, Michigan on August 20, 1947, the daughter of Richard and Dorothy (Gates) Wellman She resided most of her life in in the Ovid area and graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School and attended Lansing Community College. Martha married John Daniel on July 15, 1963, in Laingsburg, Michigan. Martha wrote children's stories, and she also was a teacher's aid for the Ovid-Elsie Public Schools at North Elementary and worked at the United Dairy Association in Okemos, Michigan. Martha enjoyed gardening, flowers, and making jewelry and served with the Ovid Historical Society. She is survived by husband, John Daniel of Ovid, Michigan, 3 daughters, Julie and Ed Chapko of Ovid, MI, Kim and Jim Nixon of Ovid, MI, Laura and Mark Hall of Ovid, MI, 5 grandchildren, David Chapko, Jessica and Tony Wieber, Mykel Hall, Cody Nixon, Kristy Hall, 1 sister, Pat and Edward Condra of Tennessee, 1 brother, Larry and Karen Wellman of Belding, MI. She is predeceased by her parents. Memorials may be made to Clinton County Hospice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, Elsie, Michigan. Leo L. Saxton, age 75 of Durand, formerly of Ovid, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at his home. A private Graveside service will be held for the family at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Owosso. The family will receive friends at the VFW Hall Reed-Raymond Post in Durand on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 2:00 pm for a celebration of Leo's life. Leo was was born in Ovid, MI on August 29, 1932, the son of
Francis and Elsie (Cook) Saxton. He resided most of his life in Shiawassee County. He
served in the United States Army as a Sgt. during the Korean War from 1950-1953. Leo
married MaryLou Clough on October 24, 1954 in Durand. He was a Tool and Die Machinist for
Mid-Land Ross for 29 years. He was a member of the Durand VFW Reed-Raymond Post, Jay-Cees,
Eagles, and Moose Lodge. He was known as Mr. Fireworks in Durand for many years as he
would set off the fireworks for the 4th of July. Willis Joseph Hettler, Jr., 75, of Cadillac, formerly of St. Johns, retired automotive salesman, died Tuesday.
