Daniel H. Thelen, Sr.

thelen_daniel.jpg (4685 bytes)Daniel H. Thelen, Sr. age 66, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008. He was born on May 5, 1942 in Westphalia the son of Louis and Alma (Kloeckner) Thelen. Dan was a semi-retired dairy farmer who loved his farm. He enjoyed cooking, tending to his garden, hunting, fishing at the pond and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the K of C Council #2890 and served on the Westphalia Township Board for several years. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gary; in-laws Cyril (Rose) Jegla, John Jegla, Robert (Ardis) Jegla, Raymond Thelen and Marion Pline.

Surviving are his loving wife, Barbara (Jegla) who he married on September 15, 1962; his children Dan Jr. (Stacey), Tom (Kim), Tim (Amber), Jon (Tina), Angie (Dennis) Riker and Andrea (Tim) Kowatch; 17 Grandchildren Matt and Whitney; Emily, Ben, and Eliza; Lyle and Janelle; Kassidy, McKenna, Jadyn and Landon; Kendra, Sierra, Rachel and Mitchell Riker; Brandon and Tyler Kowatch; Brother Gerald (Jeanene) Thelen and sister Aggie Pline; many nieces and nephews; and special buddy, his dog T.J.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., both Monday and Tuesday at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St.. The rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m., Monday, and 3 p.m. Tuesday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m., Tuesday. The family would like to thank the staff at I.R.M.C. - Greenlawn Campus and to Greg Martin for their love and support. Arrangements are being handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

ashley_dorothy.jpg (3782 bytes)Dorothy L. Ashley (Hicks) 86 died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Clinton Memorial Hospital. Dorothy was born May 7, 1922 in Victor Twp. the daughter of George and Nona (Bartlett) Ashley, and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1940. She married Lyndon Hicks in May 1990. He preceded her in death in 1995. She had worked at Heath’s Jewelry in Lansing until 1972 and had worked as cashier at several restaurants in downtown Lansing. In recent years she worked at Wyrick Orchards in Ovid and was known as one of the "Apple Ladies." Dorothy was a member of Price United Methodist Church, loved sewing, gardening, raising flowers and knitting. She especially enjoyed making and giving peanut brittle at Christmas time.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Wyrick of Ovid; nieces and nephews, David and Irene Wyrick of Byron, Shirley and Tom Willard of Sterling Hts, MI., Ken and Sandy Wyrick of Ovid and Gloria and Don Herrington of St. Johns.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with pastor Kathy Leydorf officiating. Burial will follow at Stilson Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home, Monday, June 23, 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday, June 24, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M  Memorials may be made to the Shepardsville Church, The Salvation Army or the charity of the donor’s choice.
