Clark S. Gregory, Jr.

Clark S. Gregory, Jr. “Scotty”, age 77, died suddenly Wednesday, July 30, 2008 in St. Johns, MI. He was born in St. Johns, the son of former Probate Judge Clark and Gertrude (Brink) Gregory. His education was in St. Johns, California and high school in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from Clemson University he spent 5 years in the U.S. Army serving in Germany. He resigned as a 1st lieutenant to attend graduate school at Michigan State University for a MA in business administration. During graduate school he also taught math full time at the high school in Bath, MI. In 1959 he married the former Lynne Laurence of St. Johns. He immediately was employed by the United States Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer where he served as Personnel and Administrative Officer with their foreign aid program. The family lived in over 10 countries and traveled in over 165 more countries during his career of 38 years. After retirement the family lived in Washington, DC area until 2003 when they returned to live in St. Johns where he enjoyed his Monday morning golf challenge and the Lion’s Club.

He is survived by his wife Lynne, 5 children, Clark S. III “Seth”, Scott L. and wife Karen, Maggie, MaryJane C., Michele and husband Don; 6 grandchildren, Jake, Sean, Stephen, Jessica, Matthew and Caleb and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services were held. Memorials may be made to the Clinton County Historical Society P.O. Box 23 St. Johns, MI 48879. Arrangements and service provided by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Clifford Cole, Jr.

cole_clifford.jpg (4170 bytes)Clifford Cole, Jr. died August 5, 2008, at the age of 84. He was born in Detroit on September 14, 1923. He was a retired machine repairman for General Motors. After retiring he moved to Lafitte, Louisiana before returning to St. Johns in 1997. Clifford was a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving in World War II, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, and the Knights of Columbus in Lafitte, LA. He loved model airplanes, boats and trains, mainly World War II era. Clifford married Rita Dufrene in Lafitte, LA on January 8, 1943.

Surviving is his wife of 65 years, daughter, Rita Ann (Gene) Burnham of St. Johns, grandchildren, Kristi (Kevin) Kemp and Chad (Jennifer) Burnham, all of St. Johns, great grandchildren, Kaleb and Kaylee Kemp, sisters, Dorothy Fredline of Laingsburg and Linda (Bruce) Skidmore of Utah and brother, Lloyd (Patricia) Cole of Texas. He was preceded in death by his father and step mother, Clifford and Eva Cole, daughter, Andrea Cole, grandson, Jason Hine and brothers, Marion and Burton Cole.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 8, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a vigil service 7 P.M. Thursday. Military services by St. Johns Honor Guard. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Veteran’s Administration or the D.A.V.

Helen Magdalena Freed

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Larry Smith will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI.

Helen was born in Ashley, Michigan on July 16, 1926, the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Vanecek) Ujlaky. Helen married Paul E. Freed on June 5, 1947 in Lansing, MI. She worked on the family farm. Her family, the farm and her friends were very important to her. Helen was a very hard worker. She worked at Oldsmobile during WWII. She also worked at Vaughn Seed Company as well as being a farm wife and waitress. She was a widow of two WWII Vets. She remembered walking from MSU to the Capital Building on VE Day. She had an egg business in the 60's and she was known as the "Egg Lady" in Ovid. Helen liked to play cards, always loved to dance, and loved flowers.

Helen is survived by 2 sons; Larry and Teresa (Smith) Freed of Ovid, MI, Gerry and Diane (Goodknecht) Freed of Ovid, MI, 2 daughters; Joyce Freed of Ovid, MI, Cynthia "Shannon" Freed of Grand Ledge, MI, 7 grandchildren; Kelly Peck, Lisa Freed, Geremy Freed, Shari (Freed) and Todd Snyder, Alyssa (Freed) and Robb Slocombe, Laura (Freed) and Douglas Berg, Alayne (Freed) and Rob Ferrall, 8 great grandchildren, and her sister Mildred Gomez. She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Merle Secord, second husband Paul Freed, 2 brothers; Fritz & Melvin, and 4 sisters; Rose, Mary, Anna, and Agnes.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association for Research.  The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, Michigan.

Diane Lynn DeCatur

Diane Lynn DeCatur, 48, of Harrison, formerly of St. Johns, died Monday, August 4, 2008 of natural causes. There will be no services. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Sandra Harrington,  64, of Anderson, Ind., formerly of St. Johns, died Monday, August 4, 2008. Memorial services 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at Church of God, Owosso. Arrangements by Grinsteiner Neighborhood Funeral Home, Indianapolis, Ind.

Nova N. Palmer

palmer_nova.jpg (5150 bytes)Nova N. Palmer died Monday, August 4, 2008 at the age of 78. She was born April 9, 1930 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Jack and Jean (Brown) Neville. She attended First Congregational Church and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Nova was a retired cafeteria worker at the former Perrin Palmer Elementary School in St. Johns. On July 30, 1948 she married Harold Palmer Jr. and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Palmer and LeaAnn (Tom) French of St. Johns; three sons, Donald (Lynne) of Milford, Scott (Annette) of DeWitt, and Chad (Karla) of St. Johns; grandchildren, Kari Schueller (Clay Martin), Courtney, Trent, Alec, Paige, Timothy, Natalie, and Lindsey Palmer and one sister, Linda Desprez of St. Johns.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns  with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating. Interment will follow at South Bingham Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton County Meals on Wheels 201 E. Lewis C. Moldenhauer

Lewis C. Moldenhauer died August 3, 2008, at the age of 86. He was born in Henderson, Michigan on March 2, 1922, the son of Clarence and Margaret (Lewis) Moldenhauer. He was an Oldsmobile employee retiring from the forge plant and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Lewis and Delmas were members of Wally Byamm Caravan Club International (Airstream) for 25 years. They enjoyed many rallies and caravans traveling throughout the United States, England and Europe. Lewis also enjoyed gardening, wood carving and beekeeping during his retirement, being known as the “Honey Man” around St. Johns. Lewis married Delmas Wallis in Pickford, Michigan on September 10, 1949 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his sons, Richard (Nancy) Moldenhauer of Grand Blanc, Tom (Mary Beth) Moldenhauer of St. Johns and Harry (Bette) Moldenhauer of Okeechobee, FL, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister, Mable Evans and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Richard Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Heart Association.

Earl Whitlock

whitlock_earl.jpg (4649 bytes)Earl Whitlock, died August 3, 2008, age 87, was born in Greenbush Township, Clinton County on the family farm to Earl O. and Emma (Crom) Whitlock. He graduated from St. Johns High School. He served his country proudly during World War II with the 8th Army Air Corps in England. He worked at many job shops retiring from Oldsmobile as a skilled tradesman in the Tool & Die Division. Earl was a genuine and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend and would do anything to help family and friends. He was a member of the DeWitt Township Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Township Planning Commission. He was also a past master of the St. Johns Masons and a life member of V.F.W. Post 671 in DeWitt where he was a member of the Honor Guard for many years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and a sister Doris Daniels. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce and sons, Jim (Kris) of Mears, David of DeWitt and Greg of Dimondale; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Greenbush United Methodist Church in St. Johns or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan-St. Lawrence, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48915.

Dennis D. Stevens

stevens_dennis.jpg (4246 bytes)Dennis D. Stevens died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the age of 53. He was born May 1, 1955 in St. Johns the son of Loyal and Hazel (Wanless) Stevens. He was a 1973 graduate of St. Johns High School and attended Lansing Community College. Dennis enjoyed driving his 1988 Ford Mustang and loved riding his Harley. He worked at MAHLE Engine Components U.S.A., Inc. and had previously worked at Federal Mogul for over 20 years.

Surviving are his wife, Pat, two sons, Donavan and Joshua, one sister, Patricia Paksi, one brother, Blaine (Chris) Stevens, all of St. Johns; several nieces and nephews; and his parents-in-law, Ernest and Audrey Kirby of Lyons, MI.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with the Rev. David Hudgens officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Gordon C. Mead

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Monday, August 4, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. Pastor William Stites will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and Sunday, August 3, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI.

Gordon was born in Elsie, Michigan on April 23, 1939, the son Kenneth and Catherine (Wagoner) Mead. He graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1946. Gordon married Mary Lillian Cermak on August 20, 1949 in Elsie, Michigan on the Mead Family Farm. Gordon served as police chief of Elsie. He also owned and operated Mead Gravel Business and worked as a custodian at Ovid Elsie High School. He attended Fenmore Baptist Church. Gordon enjoyed fishing, and doing crafts, with uncle sam being his signature piece.

He is survived by and his wife Mary Mead of Elsie, MI, children; Dennis Mead of Owosso, MI, Cathy Rae Mead and Ed Sipka of Elsie, MI, Cindy and Alex Vargas of Owosso, MI, grandchildren; Cristy Jo and Tim McGuckin, Meagon and Ken Palmer, John and Jennifer Mead, Matthew Mead & fiancée Sandra Gasser, Sandra Vargas, Daniel Vargas and Amanda Riddle, great grandchildren; Corbin Slaughterbeck, Spencer Slaughterbeck, Colin McGuckin, Elijha Palmer, Abigail Palmer, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Wayne Mead.
