James Edward Peach

James Edward Peach, 66, farmer, died Aug. 6. There will be no services. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Richard C. Kohagen

kohagen_richard.jpg (5506 bytes)Richard C. Kohagen, age 66, of St. Charles, Mich., passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 2008, at St. Mary's of Michigan Hospital, Saginaw.
He was born July 24, 1942, in Pewamo, the son of Donald and Dorothy (Smith) Kohagen. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Kohagen was a truck driver and a welder.

In following Richard's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Easton Church of Christ. Pastor David Maltzan will officiate. Friends are welcome to call at the church after 10 a.m. the morning of the service.

Survivors include three daughters, Tammy Fath of Chesaning, Terry (Matt) Canfield of St. Charles, Lori (Jeff) Iken of St. Charles; eight grandchildren; brothers, William (Bev) Kohagen, James (Linda) Kohagen and Edward (Trish) Kohagen; brother-in-law, Clare Crim. He was predeceased by his parents; one son, Christopher Kohagen in 1994; two sisters, Peg and Anita. Memorials are suggested to the family. Arrangements by Walker-Martin Funeral Home, Chesaning.

Alexander Joseph Thelen

thelen_alexander.jpg (4539 bytes)Alexander Joseph Thelen, 87 died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital. Alex was born March 10, 1921 in Fowler, MI the son of John and  Theresa (Goerge) Thelen. He married Rosemary Hengesbach on April 19, 1944 in Clinton County. Alex was a farmer, enjoyed playing Bingo, cards with relatives, traveling and took great pride in his farm and yard work. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Alex was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary; daughters, Carol Thelen and Debra Thelen both of St. Johns and Marlene (Fred) Martin of Westphalia; sons Donald (Debbie) Thelen of California, David (Carol) Thelen of St. Johns, Dan (Lisa) Thelen of DeWitt and Steven (Beth) Thelen of Grand Ledge; 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and sisters Viola Thelen and Joyce Halfmann of Fowler. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Urban Thelen and sisters Rita Thelen and Rosaline Luttig.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and relatives at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A Rosary and Vigil service will begin at 8:00 P.M. Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Assn., 5303 S. Cedar St., Bldg. 1, Lansing, MI 48911.

Gayle Laverne Hoffer

Gayle Laverne Hoffer died August 9, 2008, at the age of 68. He was born February 24, 1940, the son of Elton and Julia (Mentor) Hoffer. Gayle lived most of his life in the Ashley-Bannister area where he was a farmer. He was a graduate of Ashley High School and loved gardening and farming.

Gayle is survived by his children, Ken(Barbara) Hoffer of St. Johns, Duane (Marti) Hoffer of Brant and Diane (Kurt) Schurecht of Chicago, his grandchildren Matthew Hoffer and Michael Hoffer, brother Merle Hoffer, sisters Louise Bebee and Eileen (Father Daniel) Simon and sister-in-law Ruth Hoffer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Ervin and Lyle Hoffer.

Funeral service will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E Cass St., St. Johns, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Rev. Steven Lang officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening 6 – 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to NARSAD (National Association for Research of Schizophrenia and Depression). 

Howard W. “Jake” Jacobus

jacobus_howard.jpg (4150 bytes)Howard W. “Jake” Jacobus died Friday, August 8, 2008 at the age of 89. He was born November 3, 1918 in Detroit, Michigan the son of Alwin E. and Edith C. (Paul) Jacobus and has lived in St. Johns since 1964. “Jake” was an Army Veteran of WWII, a VFW member, a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and a retired U.S. Postal Service employee. He married Luella E. Meyer on September 25, 1948 in St. Louis, MO and she survives him.

Also surviving are three sons, Allen of Eureka, MI, William of Wachula, FL, Steven and wife Pam of Rudyard, MI and two grandchildren Elizabeth and William.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008 at St. Johns Lutheran Church 511 E. Sturgis St. Johns with Pastor George Brinley officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Johns Lutheran Church.

Ardella Peck

peck_ardella.jpg (4099 bytes)Ardella D. Peck, 87 passed away August 8, 2008. Ardella was born in Ingham County on July 8, 1921 the daughter of Hugh and Myrtle (Bennett) Pierce. She lived most of her life in the DeWitt area. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Russel Bower and Duain Peck and by her older sister Geraldine Phillips.

Ardella is survived by her children Patsy (Vaughn) Cook, Russel (Sallie) Bower, David (Gillian) Peck, Daryel (Diana) Peck, sister Arlene Waltz, and brother Dale Pierce, and sister in law, Alma Jean (Don) Davis She was a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and aunt to 5 nieces and nephews.

Ardella spent her adult life living on the farm and raising her four children. She was know as a hard working wife and a farmer and was a wonderful cook who specialized in rhubarb pie and cinnamon-applesauce dessert. Over the last 20 plus years, Ardella lived with her two loving sisters, Geraldine and Arlene, alternating between DeWitt and Haines City, Florida. Ardella enjoyed spending time with the friends she made throughout her lifetime, and had many fond memories with them. She cherished the time she spent with her family. Ardella enjoyed traveling and listening to her audio books.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Brian Sheen officiating. Burial will follow at DeWitt Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, St. Lawrence Campus, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, MI 48915-1999

Gary A. Peters

peters_gary.jpg (4442 bytes)Gary A. Peters left his loved ones on August 7, 2008, at the age of 59. He was born in Lansing on August 13, 1948, the son of Leonard and Alice (Peacock) Peters. He retired from Consumers Energy, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and drove bus for Michigan State University. He enjoyed ushering for many years at MSU football and hockey games, was a member of the Blue Line Club and was past president for the MSU bowling league. He enjoyed all types of auto racing and was a crew member for Tru-Mark Racing, also flagged at Spartan Raceway and I-96 Raceway. Gary married Verna Slagell on December 19, 2003 in St. Johns and she survives him.

Also surviving is his son, Todd Peters of Nashville, TN, daughter, Jamie (Darryl) Hancock of Nashville, TN, step-son, Brent (Kristen) Cleland of Lansing, step-daughter, Heather (Andrew) Scofield of Greenville, grandchildren, Braylon Hancock, Gabriel and Kennedy Cleland, Matthew and Meghann Farrell, Sean Scofield, Sean and Sierra Hancock, brothers, Charles (Julie) Peters of St. Johns and Ronald Peters of Beantown, TN, sister, Julie (Michael) Chavez of Eaton Rapids, his nieces and nephews and special friends, David and Roxie Butler of Holt. He was preceded in death by his parents, niece, Jennifer Peters and mother-in-law, Iola Slagell.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 11, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with Rev. Birt Cooper officiating. Military services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Sandra M. Harrington

In loving memory of Sandra (Messer) Harrington, 64, of Anderson, who died of terminal cancer at home after one and one-half years of struggle.
Sandy was born to Donald and Lois (Carmine) Messer of Fowler, Mich., who preceded her in death along with a sister, Ruth; father-in-law, Lester Harrington Sr., and sister-in-law, Tammie Harrington. Sandy worked for Home Interiors and Gifts, Inc. for many years retiring at age 62. Her Anderson ministries included Operation Love, the Harmony Connection, New Horizons, Contact Help, Salvation Army, Bible Study teacher, as well as others. She belonged to Eastside Church of God, where she was involved in many church ministries.

Sandy leaves to cherish her memory, a husband of 43 years, Lester W. Harrington Jr., of Anderson; a daughter, Angela Wood of Lansing, Mich.; a son, Steven Harrington of St. Johns, Mich.; six Harrington grandchildren, Cassandra, Mary, Melissa, Cora, Hunter and Jordan; two Stasurak grandchildren, Stephen and Jeremy; and two Wood grandchildren, Miranda and Cosette. She leaves two sisters, Rudy Brewbaker and Sharon Bachman; one brother, Theron Measer; four sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law. She is also survived by mother-in-law, Dorothy Harrington; a great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews as well as many friends and extended family who will miss her greatly.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eastside Church of God with Pastor Robinson officiating. The family will meet with friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
  She has donated her body for harvesting and cancer research.
