David Leo Pocuis

pocuis_david.jpg (6158 bytes)David Leo Pocuis of Bremerton WA died on Monday August 18, 2008.   The life journey of Leo Pocuis ended peacefully in the arms of his loving wife and family in his home.

Leo's life began in St. Johns, MI, in 1946, when he was born to Ben and Millie Pocuis. Early in his life, Leo developed the passions for learning, athletics, music and friendship that he kept until the very end. He received his bachelor's degree from the Honors College of Michigan State. He was the second graduating class of the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State. He exemplified one of the core values of that new medical school — restoring humanity to medical care. He completed his training at Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago and served his country in the Public Health Services as a physician in rural Eastern Washington.

In 1975, he joined the Doctors Clinic in Bremerton, where he worked as a family physician over 30 years. His ALS ( Lou Gehrig Disease) forced him to retire in 2005. Leo was loved by his patients and colleagues for his humor, compassion, calm manner and acceptance. He recruited and welcomed many new physicians and their families to Kitsap County.

In 1971, Leo met the love of his life Mary. They were married in 1972. They raised 2 fine sons, Ben and Jesse, and welcomed daughter-in-law, Erin, and granddaughter, Piper, into their lives. Leo was the consummate husband and father — loving, encouraging, accepting and always involved.

Leo will be remembered by all of us as a "Prince among men," He always saw the best in people. He loved the role of gentleman farmer with his animals, crops and flowers. He maintained an athletic lifestyle embracing the best of the Pacific Northwest with hiking, kayaking, boating, skiing, tennis, and other racquet sports.

He approached his disease with a quiet courage that gave his family and friends strength and inspiration. He continued to live life to the fullest until the very end and died with no regrets. We will remember him at a celebration of life at a dessert potluck September 27 at 2 p.m. at the Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club.

Memorials may be made in Leo's name to the ALS Association, Evergreen Chapter, 19110 66th Ave., Suite G-101, Kent, WA 98032.
