Norman R. Buckwalter Jr.

buckwalter_norman.jpg (5285 bytes)Norman R. Buckwalter Jr. of St. Johns, Michigan died on Monday, November 3, 2008 from complications due to throat cancer. “Buck”, as he was widely known in Lansing, was the owner and manager of Buck’s Auto Body for 40 years.

Norm is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joyce Buckwalter. The two met in Sarasota, Florida in 1962 on a “blind date”. Norman and Joyce were married in 1963 in Sarasota and traveled together extensively. Together they raised four children and Joyce cared for him tirelessly in his final months. In addition to his wife, Norman is survived by his four children: his son, Norman R. (Karen) Buckwalter III and daughters, Elizabeth (Buddy) Howes,Mary (Michael Johnson) Buckwalter and Teresa (Joe Gonzalez) Buckwalter. Norman also has four grandchildren: Michael Buckwalter, Taylor Howes, Elizabeth Buclwatler-Johnson and Nicholas Buckwalter-Johnson. Norm is survived by all of his siblings including John Buckwalter of Fowlerville, MI, Joan Kolp of Oswego,NY, Mary Dexter of Littleton, CO, Christine Brosius of Littleton, CO, Kathy Wiggins of Littleton, CO and William Buckwalter of Conifer, CO.

“Buck” was born in Canton, Ohio in 1942 to parents Norman and Rosemary Buckwalter (Saxton). The family moved to Florida where Norman graduated from high school and began both college and working on cars. Mr. Buckwalter was a dedicated father, husband and business-owner. Always giving honest and quality service to his customers, he rarely missed a day of work. His strong work ethic resulted in seeing all of his four children through college. In addition to his passion for fixing cars, Norman enjoyed riding his motorcycle, boating, and trips out west to visit family. He never missed a family reunion in 40 years. A generous person, he was always willing to help out a friend or family member in need and did so often.

The family appreciated all of the phone calls, prayers, visits and cards from his extended family, friends and customers over the past eight months during his cancer treatment.

Visitation and viewing will be Thursday, November 6th from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns, Michigan. Join us to commemorate and celebrate his life on Friday, November 7th at Osgood Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M.

Carolyn M. Martin

martin_carolyn.jpg (4590 bytes)Carolyn M. Martin, age 88, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on November 4, 2008. She was born on May 17, 1920 in Pewamo the daughter of Hubert and Anna (Menner) Pline. Carolyn was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and the Christian Mother's Society. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters, an infant daughter Margaret, grandson David Smith and her husband of 61 years, Joseph I. Martin.

Surviving are her children Patricia (Eugene) Geller of Allen, TX., Beverly (Ronald) Nurenberg of Westphalia, Anne (Edward) Smith of Westphalia and James (Carla) Martin of Placerville, CA.; 15 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Helen Wirth; brother-in-law Bud (Arlene) McCrumb.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 7, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel. A Scriptural Wake Service will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 pm., Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Fr. Al Miller Trust Fund in memory of Carolyn. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Rita A. Irrer

irrer_rita.jpg (4133 bytes)Rita A. Irrer, age 91, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2008. She was born on April 16, 1917 in Westphalia the daughter of William and Veronica (Martin) Arens. Mrs. Irrer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and the Christian Mothers Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald on February 10, 1995 and together they shared 58 years of marriage. she was also preceded in death by her sons-in-law Denis Fandel and Bob Dolan, sister Marie (Carl) Smith, twin brother Joseph Arens and brother Gerald Arens.

Rita was very proud of her family, surviving are children Marilyn Fandel, Joann (John) Lehman, Sharon Dolan, Don (Judy) Irrer, Dale (Elaine) Irrer, David (Karen) Irrer, Shirley (Russ) Manning, Larry (JoAnn) Irrer, Janet Irrer, Cindy (Denny) Miller, William (Tina) Irrer; 40 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen (Van Etten) Reese

reese_mary.jpg (4365 bytes)Mary Ellen (Van Etten) Reese passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the age of 81. She was born March 20, 1927 in St. Johns, the daughter of Anthony and Ellen (Gladstone) Stambersky. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Rebekah Lodge and was an avid gardener. Mary Ellen worked at Central National Bank and was also the Payroll Clerk for the Clinton Co. Road Commission although her first career was her best as a very loving mother.

She is survived by her daughters, Jane Marek of Ludington, Joy (John) Jelinek of Elsie, Jo (Steve) Wheeler of Kentwood, sons, Tom (Sandy) VanEtten of Bannister, Dan (Elaine) VanEtten of Fowler, seventeen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, three sisters, Jane Jolly and Dorothy Schmid of St. Johns, and Margaret (Robert) Waltz of Lake City. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Samuel VanEtten, sister, Frances Ann Stambersky and her ex-husband and father of her children, Samuel VanEtten.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Osgood Funeral Home with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating, burial at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 – 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM Monday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the First Congregational Church in Mary Ellen’s memory.

John Allan Brichan

brichan_john.jpg (4878 bytes)John Allan Brichan, age 72, of Elsie, MI Died Thursday, October 30th, 2008 at Ashley Care Center , Ashley, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held at Elsie United Methodist Church, on Sunday, November 2nd at 1:00 P.M., Pastor Edwin Snook will officiate. Burial of his cremains will be at Middlebury Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday 12:30 P.M. until the time of services at Elsie United Methodist Church.

John was born in Owosso, Michigan on November 27, 1935, the son Allan and Beatrice (Woodin) Brichan. He graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1953 and resided most of his life in Owosso area and moved to the Elsie in 1966. He married Barbara Manas in 1955 she predeceased him in 1981. On August 26, 1989 he and Eleanor Jo Brichan were married on the farm in Elsie. He was a farmer and enjoyed playing pool, bowling and polka dancing. He also enjoyed spending time in the candle shop and especially visiting with people at the candle shop and at craft sales. He attended Elsie United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor of Elsie, 2 daughters, Teresa Ann and Frank Buwa of Elkhart, IN., Loretta Jean and Gregory Reasor of Westmont, Il.. 2 step-daughters, Paula Elizabeth and Scott Fuller of Flint, Pamela and Glen Campbell of Houston, TX., step son Peter and Merrie Raab of Flushing, MI., 6 grandchildren; Jeffrey, John and Aubrie, Andrew, Shannon, Azalee, and brother Gerald and Marcia Brichan of Whitehall, MI. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Barbara (Manas) Brichan.

Memorials may be made to Elsie United Methodist Church or Ashley Care Center, Ashley, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, Michigan.

Neva Elizabeth Louth

louth_neva.jpg (5281 bytes)Neva Elizabeth Louth passed from this world into the presence of the Lord with family at her bedside on Wednesday, October 29, 2008. She was born in Clinton County on February 17, 1914, the daughter of Griffin and Martha (Sheldon) Burl. Neva married Christy Louth in 1931 and he preceded her in death in 1986. She worked for many years at Ovid Produce Company in Ovid while at the same time being a good homemaker and excellent cook. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Riley Township.

Surviving are son, Jack Louth of Arizona and daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Harold Smalldon of St. Johns; three grandchildren, Kathy (Chris) Fairchild, Kris (Bill) Rickman and Bill (Jill) Smalldon; ten great grandchildren, Aaron, Jacob, and Christy Fairchild, Alex, Ben, and Claire Rickman and Zachary, Brock, Andrew, and Samuel Smalldon. Also preceding Neva in death were five sisters, Hazel, Mable, June, Alene, Joyce and five brothers, Frank, Earl, Raymond, Maurice, and Edward.

Funeral services will be 3:30 P.M. Saturday, November 1, 2008 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, burial at St. Peter Cemetery with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. The family will receive friends 2-8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church.
