Joseph Anthony Simon

simon_joseph.jpg (5137 bytes)Joseph Anthony Simon , age 78, passed away on November 9, 2008. He was born March 3, 1930 in Westphalia the son of Anthony and Dora (Cook) Simon. Joseph was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the St. Joseph Society. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and loved his family very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alvin, Casper, Julius and Walter Simon.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary; children Don (Theresa) Simon, Marilyn (Joe) Peckins, Jerry (Jean) Simon, Dan ((Terri) Simon, Dave (Debbi) Simon, Chris (Patty) Simon, Paul (Mary Lou) Simon, Teresa (Kevin) Schneider, Roger (Robyn) Simon, Sharon (Scott) Brown, Eric (Susie) Simon, Mary Jo (Mark) Pattison; 30 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother Hiliary ((Thelma) Simon; sisters Marian Wieber, Rita Pung, and Juliann (Lester) Miller; sisters-in-law Anna Thelen, Agnes Schneider and Janet (Marvin) Fedewa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 13, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. and on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel the rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m.. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Helen L. Fitzpatrick

fitzpatrick_helen.jpg (4638 bytes)Helen L. Fitzpatrick, 97, of St. Johns, died Saturday, November 8, 2008. Helen was born June 17, 1911 in St. Johns, the daughter of Renze and Florence (Burley) DeVries. Helen was a homemaker and taught school. She married Glendon H. Fitzpatrick on September 10, 1932 and he preceded her in death on October 2, 1975.

She is survived by three sons, Bruce (Norma) Fitzpatrick, Stuart (Sharon) Fitzpatrick and David (Sally) Fitzpatrick, all of St. Johns, MI; daughter, Shirley (Henry) Attwell of Potterville, MI; two daughters-in-law, Diane Fitzpatrick of Ludington, and Gail Kohlhase of Colorado; 20 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Dr. Roger Fitzpatrick and Norman Fitzpatrick; two sisters, Lillian Orvis and Ruth McMaster; two brothers, Burley DeVries and Henry DeVries; and four great-grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church in St. Johns on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lori Sykes officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home Monday evening, 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or her favorite charity, The American Cancer Society.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel on Tuesday, November 11th at 11:00 am, Pastor Edwin Snook will officiate. Visitation will be held on Sunday November 9, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and on Monday, November 10, 2008 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel.

Dorothy was born in Chesaning, Michigan on September 15, 1925, the daughter Oliver Franklin Walker III and Edna (Cantley) Walker. She attended the Chesaning Union High School and graduated with the class of 1943. On January 2, 1944 she married George Robert Harmon on the family farm. Robert died May 6, 1992. She was a bookkeeper at Universal Electric in Owosso, DM Christians Department Store, Swanson Mfg. and then Clinton Memorial Hospital Pharmacy Department, retiring in 1987. She was a past member of the Spile Dam Club, Rochester Colony Historical Association, Chesaning Historical Society and Museum. She enjoyed Genealogy, crocheting, reading and her family. She was also a member of Elsie United Methodist Church.

Dorothy is survived by 2 sons Richard Harmon of Ovid, Bill and Tammi Harmon of Ovid, 2 daughters, Kathy and Jack Tyler of Elsie, Mary and Rex Tyler of Elsie, 7 grandchildren Donna Tyler and fiancé Rob, Elizabeth and Timothy Heinze, Shayne Tyler and fiancé Debbie, Christopher and Lacey Tyler, Amanda Tyler and Tim Tyler. 9 great grandchildren Alex, Jacinda, Shelbie, Serina, Katie, Faith, Bryce, Kyran, and Cohen. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 1 son Frank, great grandson, Tyler, 3 sisters, and 3 brothers.

Memorials may be made to Niemann-Pick Foundation. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, Michigan.

Mildred Ondrusek

Mildred Ondrusek died Saturday, November 8, 2008. She was born October 5, 1913 in Ashley, Michigan, the daughter of John and Mary (Kalupar) Kral. Mildred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. She married William Ondrusek March 2, 1935 in Bannister, Michigan and he preceded her in death on December 5, 1997.

Mildred is survived by her son, Robert (Jean) Ondrusek of Beech Grove, Indiana, two daughters, Dorothy (Richard) Kociba of Auburn, Michigan and Betty (Gary) Kociba of Lewis Center, Ohio. Grandchildren are Therese (Ed) Schmitt, Donna (Gerald) Rudolf, Michael Ondrusek, Keith (Barbara) Kociba, Kevin (Elizabeth) Kociba, Greg (Lori) Kociba, Lora (Bryan) Lambert and Mark (Elizabeth) Kociba. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 11 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Monday, November 10 at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with a Vigil Service at 7 pm Monday evening. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Fran was born on October 2, 1924 in Charlotte, MI the daughter of Clifford and Luella (Randall) Shaver. She married Alfred Ziggs in Detroit, MI on July 22, 1945 and he preceded her in death in Sept. 1967. She later married Floyd Robert Bigham on October 15, 1969 in Ovid. Fran was a homemaker and a member of Grove Bible Church. They volunteered for many years at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid.

She is survived by her husband Floyd Robert, a son Edward (Beulah) Ziggs of California, Missouri; daughters, Mary (Gale) Bancroft of Ovid and Kathleen (Alan) Welter of Grand Ledge; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; step-daughters, Marah Stone and Janice Marlene Bigham of California and Teresa Bigham of Lansing and several step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters.

The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Homes, St. Johns Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Smith and Pastor Robert Prange officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. Memorial contributions may be given to Grove Bible Church.

David James Johnston

johnston_david.jpg (4893 bytes)David James Johnston, age 84, of St. Johns, MI passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Carveth Village, Middleville, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Johns Chapel on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 6:30 P.M. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:30 P.M. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery Cadillac, Michigan.

David was born in Charlevoix, Michigan on March 1, 1924, the son of Clarence and Annie (Gaunt) Johnston. He attended East Jordan High School, and attended MSU where he received his accounting degree. On October 16, 1946 David married Patricia E. "Trixie" Knapp in Cadillac, Michigan. Patricia passed away on September 2, 2006. He served in the U.S. Army in WW II in the 104th Infantry Division, Timberwolves, Combat Division.

David worked as the personnel director for BF Goodrich in Cadillac, also as a controller for the GLENN Corporation in Michigan. He also worked as a salesmaster for Lorenz/Buege Buick in Lansing. David resided most of his life in St. Johns. He enjoyed down hill skiing at Caberfae, mowing his lawn in the sunshine. He also enjoyed having his private pilot license since 1948. David was also very supportive of his wife and her involvement with operating "Trixies Pixies". He was a member of First United Methodist Church in St Johns, Michigan and Kiwanis of Manistee.

Survivors include his daughter Veronica Johnston of St. Johns, two sons; David Johnston of Greenville, SC, and Daniel and Brenda Johnston of Wayland, MI, and five grandchildren and his dog Bosco. He was predeceased by his wife Trixie, daughter Patricia K. Johnston on June 2, 2004, brother George, and sister Marie.
