Daale Edward Maier

maier_daale.jpg (4066 bytes)Daale E. Maier, 76, of East Lake, died Monday afternoon December 1, 2008 at home with his loving wife, Janice, at his side and the under the care of North Woods Hospice.

Born December 25, 1931 in Victor Township, Michigan, son of the late Frank & Mabel (McConnell) Maier, Daale was a 1949 graduate of St. Johns High School. Daale enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on December 9, 1954. On January 29, 1955, he married the former Janice Wilcox in Crystal and made St. Johns their home. Daale was employed at Michigan State University as a sheet metal journeyman for 25 years until his retirement in 1994. Daale and his wife Janice have been residents of McMillan since 1998 and he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post #74 both of Newberry and the V.F.W. Post #8372 of Engadine. Daale was also a member of the Oddfellow Lodge, formerly served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #81 and former member of the Congregational Church all of St. Johns. In his leisure time, Daale enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his family. Besides his parents, Daale is preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his loving wife Janice of McMillan; son Brian of McMillan and daughter Denise (Tom) Pentecost of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren Katie (Danny) Longley, Mitch Pentecost, Cara Pentecost, Lincoln Maier and Cody Maier; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry on Friday December 5, 2008 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Memorial services will follow at the church at 11:00 am with Pastor Nancy Barkat officiating. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church Furnace Fund or North Woods Hospice in memory of Daale E. Maier. Condolences may be expressed at www.beaulieufuneralhome.com. Bethel DeVries

devries_bethel.jpg (5509 bytes)Bethel DeVries died November 30, 2008 at the age of 90. Born December 25, 1917 in Elsie, the daughter of Jefferson and Ethel (Cordray) Walker. Bethel married George W. DeVries on March 7, 1937 in Duplain Twp., and he preceded her in death on April 18, 1996. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Owosso.

Surviving her are daughters, Doris (LaVern) Wilcox of Bath and Josephine (Roger) Sadler of Harrison, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, brother, Clifford (Carol) Walker, Sister In-Law, Harriet Henry, Brother In-Law, Jack Doak. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a baby daughter, brothers, Earl, Lloyd, Glen and Raymond Walker, sisters, Ruby Dennis and Beatrice Doak.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, with Pastor Kenneth Herbruck officiating, burial at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6 - 8 Tuesday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Georgia L. Mead

mead_georgia.jpg (4465 bytes)Georgia L. Mead of Lansing was born March 13, 1916 in Olive Township, MI, the daughter of George and Mabel Sloat. She passed away Saturday, November 29, 2008 in St. Johns. Georgia was retired after having been a teacher and principal for 44 years. She began teaching at the age of 18 in a one-room schoolhouse in Clinton County. She earned her teaching degree from Central Michigan University and then taught in Bath, MI before working in Lansing. She received her Master's of Teaching from Michigan State University. She taught in Willow and Barnes schools before becoming the principle of Christiancy School in 1949. In 1957 she became the principle of Cavanaugh School. She was known as "Mother Mead" to all. She was kind and gracious, and could always be counted on to "look on the sunny side of life" with a smile and a good laugh. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Mead, beloved brother Roger and his wife Betty Jean, and many of her dear and cherished friends.

Surviving are her niece and nephew, Rhonda and Frank, and their children Marcus and Isabella, along with her husband Ken's family Doris, Kathy, Lisa, Colette, Paulette, and Kari Beth, and many cousins of the Sloat family in Ovid-Elsie. Many loving friends that she has had for a lifetime also survive Georgia.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Palmer, Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Joe Huston officiating. Interment will follow in Wilsey Cemetery, DeWitt. Visitation is Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel, 520 E. Mt. Cynthia Kay Glowacki

glowacki_cynthia.jpg (4382 bytes)Cynthia Kay Glowacki, age 65, of North Star, died peacefully on November 28, 2008, at her home, with her family at her bedside.

Cynthia was born February 10, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Thelma (Langley) and Paul Roland West, Sr. She graduated from high school in 1961, at Marietta, Georgia. She married Stanley Glowacki in Columbus, Georgia, on October 19, 1963.

Through the years, Cynthia worked part time in retail and banking, but most of her time was spent as a homemaker, mother, and caring for her grandchildren. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and spoiling them. She also enjoyed camping in her motorcoach, going to the casino, and polka dancing. She loved children and always had a ready smile and a hug.

Cynthia is survived by her husband, Stanley; her children, Dan (Angie) Glowacki of St. Johns, Cheryl (Todd) Rupprecht of Walhalla, South Carolina, Jill (Joe) Simmons of Ithaca, and Emily Glowacki (Mark) of St. Johns; 6 grandchildren, with one more due in March 2009; and her brother, Robert (Joyce) West, of Waverly, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Paul West; and her sister, Betty Kelley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Ithaca. Interment will follow in North Star Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. and Monday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca. There will be a Prayer Service at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Geneva Wohlscheid

wohlscheid.geneva.jpg (4302 bytes)Geneva Wohlscheid, 89, of Pewamo, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grand mother, went to the Lord on November 29, 2008 surrounded by her loving children. She was greeted by her husband, Isidore Wohlscheid, whom she married on November 30, 1940 in Fowler, Michigan. Geneva was born in Fowler, MI, February 14, 1919 the daughter of John and Anna (Schneider) Kramer. Geneva was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed baking and sharing her homemade breads with friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her nine children, Roy (Mary Margaret) Wohlscheid of Clinton Twp., MI, James Sr. (Brenda Jackway) Wohlscheid of Lansing, John (Ann Marie) Wohlscheid of DeWitt, Janice Spitzley of Westphalia, Edward Wohlscheid of Lansing, Marie (Terry) Medlock of Eaton Rapids, Francis Wohlscheid of Brooklyn Park, MN, Susan (Luke) Koenigsknecht of St. Johns and Marcia (Kevin) Miller of Portland. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and her brother-in-law, Donald Ott. Geneva is preceded in death by her parents, husband, great grandson Jeremy Spitzley; brothers, Matthew, Paul, Gerald, and Roy, and her sister Josetta Ott.

Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo, MI. The family will receive visitors at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler, Sunday evening 7 to 9 pm with a rosary at 8 pm Sunday evening and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Monday with rosaries at 3 pm and 8 pm. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Westphalia. Donations can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church and the parish mission, Lvia Joseph Orphanage in Haiti. In lieu of thank you notes, a donation of masses will be sent to the Marianist Missions.

Ronald Hoenecke

hoenecke_ronald.jpg (4880 bytes)Ronald Norbert Hoenecke, age 66, died November 26, 2008 at his home. He was born February 23, 1942 in Chicago, IL, the son of Arthur Henry and Grace Hoenecke. Ron married Sandra (McEntire) Cook on April 23, 1999 in Grand Ledge, MI and she survives him. Ron was a truck driver for numerous years and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Grand Ledge, and the Knights of Columbus. Rad had a love for golfing with his grandchildren.

Also surviving are a son David Hoenecke, sister Mary Ann Rouser, brothers Paul Hoenecke, Richard (Judy) Hoenecke, and Daniel (Donna) Hoenecke, step-daughters, Pamela (Gerard) Fedewa and Catherine Thelen, step-sons, Steven (Lisa) Fisher and Robert Cook, 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns with Fr. Jim Eisele officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 pm and Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Osgood Funeral Home. A Rosary Service will be held at 7 pm Sunday and a Vigil Service at 7 pm on Monday. In lieu of flowers sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials made to the charity of the family’s choice.

Paula Harris

harris_sandra.jpg (4071 bytes)Paula Marie Harris (Sanchez) Maple Rapids Paula Marie Harris (Sanchez), former Beekman Center student, formerly of Lansing, 41, died November 26, 2008.

Paula, whose loving nature and incandescent smile will be with us always, is survived by her mother and stepfather, Donna Sanchez and John Jenkins; father, Francisco Sanchez; sisters, Kathy Kerr and Renee Harris; and nieces, Christina and Chelsie Sanchez. She was predeceased by her brother, James Sanchez.

Funeral services 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 3rd at Hope Bible Baptist Church, 508 Maple St., Maple Rapids, MI. Visitation at the church from 9-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family to the Paula Marie Harris Fund, c/o Nancy Wonch, 5/3 Bank would be appreciated. Emerson "Barney" Barrone

barrone_emmerson.jpg (4363 bytes)Emerson "Barney" Barrone of Alma formerly of Lakeland, Fl. and St. Johns died peacefully November 27, 2008 at the age of 86. We rejoice that he is with his Savior in heaven. Yet, will miss his robust enjoyment of life. He was born in Hubbardston, MI, the son of Elmer and Mary (Ransom) Barrone. Emerson married Dolores Wilke on June 26, 1954 in Michigan City, IN, and she preceded him in death in May of 1998. Emerson was a WW II Army veteran and retired from Federal Mogul where he was a quality control manager, was a member of the E.L.C.A., and the Masonic Lodge # 178 of Hubbardston. Emerson loved his Lord and his family.

Surviving Emerson are his sons, David (Ana Poplaski) Barrone of Granger, IN, and William (Carol) Geleske of Barrington, IL, also grandchildren, Philip (Anna) Geleske, Timothy (Pinky) Geleske, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Rebecca Barrone and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Emerson was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 5, 2008, at the Masonic Home of Michigan in Alma with Pastor George Ayoub officiating, burial 1:00 p.m at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. The family will receive friends, Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI. Mary V. Campbell

Mrs. Mary V. Campbell of Fairburn GA, formerly of Ypsilanti and Fowler, passed away November 28, 2008.

She is survived by her husband, Richard M. (Dick) Campbell of Fairburn; daughters, Karen L. Bakos of Acworth; Kathleen Miccoli and her husband Michael of Dallas; son, Kevin Richard Campbell and his wife Doreen of Acworth; sisters, Ruth Anne Goerge of Rochester Hills, MI; Phyllis E. Hall of Golden, CO; grandsons, Joseph and Daniel Bakos and Patrick and Ryan Campbell.

A vigil for the deceased will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 7 o’clock with Deacon Bill Hampton Celebrant. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 10 o’clock at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Deacon Bill Hampton and Rev. Victor Galier Celebrant. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park.

Deborah D. Brown

She was born January 28, 1952 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of James “Cliff” and Alice (McCarry) Dell. She was a 1970 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School, was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, attended Northpointe Church in DeWitt and was a retired teller from Lansing Automakers Federal Credit Union. On February 25, 1972 she married Dale Brown and he survives her.

Also surviving are three daughters, Jennifer (Eric) Branch of Greenville, MI, Mara Brown and Keri (Thede Rahl) Brown both of Lansing; one son, Matthew (Lori) Brown of Spring Hill, TN; six grandchildren, Isabelle and Irene Branch, Brendan Brown and Daedyn Lockhart and Ellie and Amelia Brown; her mother, Alice Dell of Lansing; one sister, Roberta Gadaleto of Lansing; four brothers, Clarence (Kathleen) Dell of Laingsburg, Rodger (Sandy) Dell of Camden, TN, Patrick (Norma) Dell of Riverdale, MI, Tim (Carol) Dell of Bloomfield Hills, MI; parents-in-law Eugene and Esther Brown of Lansing and many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, a brother James Dell and a brother-in-law, George Brown.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday, December 1, 2008 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Rev. James Dyke officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Estelle M. Simon

simon_estelle.jpg (4493 bytes)Estelle M. Simon, age 92, of Westphalia passed away on November 26, 2008 at her home. She was born February 28, 1916 in Westphalia, the daughter of Joseph P. and Elizabeth (Bauer) Simon. Estelle was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and a member of the choir for over 60 years. She retired from Oldsmobile after 30 years of service.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Herman, Raymond, Linus and Norbert. Surviving are are her sister-in-law, Bertha Simon; 8 nephews; 3 nieces; and a special friend, Mille Droste.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008 at St. Mary's Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel. A Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Special thanks to Paula and Karen of Hospice Advantage for all their care and support. Robert "Bob" Wood

wood_robert.jpg (4311 bytes)Robert "Bob" Wood, 79, of St. Johns passed away peacefully on November 25, 2008 surrounded by his family. Bob passed away as a result of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Bob was born on November 7, 1929 in Lansing, MI. He was a Second Lieutenant in the Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Wisconsin Law School. Bob was a practicing attorney for 40 years. He also served the St. John community as a Mayor, City Commissioner, County Commissioner, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and Justice of the Peace. He was a member of First Congregational Church and resided in St. Johns for over 44 years.

Bob was an avid vegetable and flower gardener, a voracious reader and an amazing civil war buff. He was also known for his tremendous Spartan spirit and his loyalty to MSU Football. He had a great love for all kinds of music with his favorites being; Opera, Dixieland and Bagpipes. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn who died in 2003, and his parents Howard, who died in 1981, and Noreen, who died in 1995.

He is survived by his children Wendy (Jim) Pittman of St. Johns, Margaret (Mark) Pittman of Diamondale and Doug (Mindy) Wood of Grand Ledge. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren, Stephanie of Dimondale, Monica of West Lafayette, IN, and Andrew, Melissa, Sarah, Eric of St. Johns, Elizabeth and Joseph of Grand Ledge as well as his brother Larry of Fayetteville, AR and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gary and Sharon Lloyd of Wheaton, IL and several nieces and nephews. Bob’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful staff at Grand Haven Living Center in Lansing, MI where Bob had been receiving care for the past two years. They would especially like to thank the following caregivers for the love and attention they gave Bob: Tomassine, Gingi, Kameisha, Helen, Brenda, Naterria, Dawn, Sandra, David, Dana, Elise, and the nursing and administration staff. They would also like to thank Hospice of Lansing who helped Bob and his family during his transition to his homecoming in heaven, Heartland Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association and Dr. Strandmark for the wonderful support and services that were provided for Bob and his family during his journey with Alzheimer’s.

The family is being served by Osgood Funeral Home of St. Johns where his funeral will be held Monday, December 1st at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, November 29th from 6-8pm and Sunday, November 30th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
