Earl L. Moriarty Earl L. Moriarty died January 19, 2009 at the age of 68. He was born January 20, 1940 in Lansing, Michigan the son of Joseph P. Moriarty and Pauline Armour. Earl retired from GM and was a member of First Baptist Church. He married Agnes May in St. Johns on May 8, 1965 and she survives him. Also surviving is son, Joseph R. (Shari) Moriarty of St. Johns, daughter, Mary (Thomas) Kerby of Maple Rapids, four grandchildren, Biancha and Brandon Moriarty and Kaitlyn and Kasey Kerby, sister, Carol Skorna of St. Johns, brother, Michael Moriarty of Florida and many nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, with Rev. Tim Cockroft officiating, burial at Ford Cemetery in Elsie. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor or Meals On Wheels. Sister Joan May, SSJ of St, Mark's in Goodrich, age 67, entered into eternal life on Friday, January 16, 2009 after a sudden and unexpected heart attack. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2009, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 7296 Gale Road, Goodrich, MI, Bishop Earl Boyea officiating. An additional Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009 in Nazareth, MI. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Nazareth, MI. Contributions may be made to Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph or St. Mark's Catholic Church. Visitation 10 a.m.-12 Noon and 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A prayer service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Sister Joan will be at the church 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of the Mass. Additional visitation 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2009 with prayer service 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Nazareth Center, 3427 Gull Road, Nazareth, MI. Sister Joan was the thirteenth child of thirteen born to William and Anna (Bohr) May, coming into the world on March 7, 1941 in Portland, MI. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth, Michigan on September 1, 1959, and was preparing to celebrate her Golden Jubilee marking fifty years as a religious Sister. Sister Joan was a classroom teacher in many Catholic elementary schools throughout Michigan for sixteen years, followed by eleven years as principal at St. Joseph's School in St. Johns, Michigan. In June of 1989, Sister Joan was appointed Pastoral Coordinator of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Goodrich by Bishop Kenneth Povish of the Diocese of Lansing; she offered twenty years of loving and dedicated service to the family of St. Mark's. In addition to her many duties as Pastoral Coordinator at St. Mark's, Sister Joan was very active in the greater Goodrich area, serving on the Board of Directors of Outreach East in Davison, and the Goodrich Ministerial Association. She served on numerous Diocesan committees, such as the Pastoral Council, Education Committee, Diocesan Coordinating Committee, as well as committees inside of her religious community, such as the Sisters of Saint Joseph Vocation Vision Committee, and the Chapter Elections Committee, and was a trustee of St. Joseph Health System, Tawas. As a sign of their great love for Sister Joan, the people of St. Mark's named the parish center (built under Sister's leadership) in her honor. "The Sister Joan M. May, SSJ Parish Center" received its name during the year-long festivities celebrating St. Mark's twenty-fifth anniversary as a parish in 2003. Mourning her loss and celebrating her life are best friends Sister Heidi King and Sister Rita Schafer; all of the Sisters of St. Joseph; all of the people of St. Mark's; countless friends and family members whose lives she touched, including sister Laurine Spitzley of Mulliken, MI and brother and sister-in-law Leon and Jeri May of Portland, MI; sisters-in-law, Marie May, Germaine May, Germaine P. May; brother-in-law, Don Spitzley; and many nieces and nephews, godchildren, and friends near and far. Sister Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Elizabeth, Ruth, Mary Ann, Katherine and Dorothy; brothers, Bill, Harold, Robert, Carl and Fred; dear friend and mentor, Sister Marie Celine Allen; and many friends and loved ones. All who knew Sister Joan loved her deeply, and she them. We sorely grieve her loss yet rejoice with her in the fact that this magnificent woman, "our shining star" is, without a doubt, dancing and singing in Heaven with Jesus and all of the family members, Sisters, and friends who went before her. "Tony" Schmitt Lansing Born May 27, 1925 in Westphalia, MI to John Peter and Regina (Ott) Schmitt; died January 15, 2009 at the age of 83. Tony was best known as a kind and noble man who would share the latest joke or play a clever prank on any unsuspecting friend or passerby. He would never leave the house without his rattlesnake eggs or hand buzzer. He was a long-time member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Lansing. He was employed by Consumers Power for 39 years before retiring in 1985. Tony was preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Beverly; sons, Dennis Schmitt (fiancee Kerry Thornton), Paul (Kimberly) Schmitt; daughter, Sharon (Bruce) Robbins; four grandchildren, Shelly (Ryan) LaFeve, Sarah (Erik) Schaefer, Lauren and Tyler Wicke; two great-granddaughters, Carolyn and Addison, who were his pride and joy; sisters, Clara Wirth and Mary Spitzley; and several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 19, 11:00 a.m. at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, 102 W. Randolph, Lansing, with the Rev. Michael J. Williams, officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing, on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. where a Scripture Service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Therese Parish Friends Trust, 102 W.
