Update on the 32 RBW baseball pic Emails from a pair of readers yielded the names of two players in the 1932 RBW baseball photo that was featured in The Independent last week. Chuck Brainerd of Tucson, Ariz., wrote to say that his father, Don Brainerd, was the catcher on the team. "It was his senior year in high school," Chuck emailed. "It is difficult to be absolutely certain which picture is his. My guess would be the person on the far right in the second row." Rich and Jan Bensinger emailed to say that Richs father, Charles - or "Benny" - Bensinger, is fourth from left, second row. "He played first base on the team," Jan wrote. Jan also gave an excellent suggestion that we intend to follow up on. She noted that the original photo had appeared in the 1932 Wilsonian, commenting that we should attempt to find that volume. Rosemary Magsig says, "The player third from left back row was my father in-law, Glenn Magsig. Not sure what position he played, but he always spoke of how proud he was to be on the team. We also believe his brother Archie Magsig was on the team, but not sure which player." The photo reprint was provided to us courtesy of Dick Smith, via a neighbor, Merritt Scharnweber. The coach (far left) is Al Dean who coached every sport there was to coach at one time or another in the early 30s at RBW. The other identified team members are Gordon Ripla (fifth from left, back row), and Bob Sirrine (second from right, second row). Persons with information on the unknown baseball players should call Scharnweber, (989) 224-2570, or email The Independent, rhonda@sjindy.com
