Winter Snows And Safe And Clear Sidewalks: City Code 95.84 requires that homeowners, business owners and other premises occupants clear ice and snow from sidewalks abutting their property as soon as is practical. Time requirements are set out in the above-mentioned ordinance, which can be reviewed on-line at the City’s website www.cityofstjohnsmi.com.
With the considerable accumulation of early winter snow and ice this year, City crews have been plowing and salting city streets as required. The City has a formal snow removal policy it follows for prioritizing the plowing of city thoroughfares.
Conclusion Of Fall Leaf Collection Program: Thanks to the conscientious efforts of our local residents, the bagged leaf collection program was a huge success again this year. It is noteworthy that this program provides environmental benefits to the community, is less taxing on the storm sewer system (leaves don’t wash into the city storm drains) and allows the City to offer free compost to residents at the DPW compost site. Also, thanks to the many residents who voluntarily transported their leaves to the DPW drop-off site.
Christmas Tree Recycling: At the risk of getting ahead of ourselves . . . once the holiday festivities are over, we encourage you to put your Christmas tree between the curb and sidewalk for city crew pick-up. Please remove all ornaments and tinsel. The city will recycle the organics in an environmentally friendly way. We provide this information now in that the next city manager newsletter won’t go to press again until mid-January of 2009.
United States Census: The federal government will be conducting its ten year census in 2010. The city was recently contacted regarding job opportunities for 2010 census takers. Interested persons can contact 1-866-861-2010 toll-free for an application or more information regarding these positions. Accurate census information is critical to our community in that the City population base dictates in part the receipt of governmental funding for certain services and capital improvements.
Public Meeting/Ambulance Service: The St. Johns City Commission will hold a public meeting regarding its continued membership in the Clinton Area Ambulance Service Authority. An alternative proposal for City ambulance service will also be discussed. Regardless of what decision is reached by the Commission concerning this issue, ambulance service will at all times be available and at the ready for City residents. The meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers.
Happy Holidays: Wishing you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.
