Wilma “Billie” Hettler Knaup
Billie Hettler Knaup passed away peacefully at age 91 in Fort Myers, Florida on January 21, 2009 after a lengthy illness. She was a Lansing resident until 1989 when she moved to Fort Myers.
The daughter of William and Clara (Warren) Hettler, she was born on July 19, 1917 in Ovid, MI. She was the youngest of five daughters. She was raised in St. Johns where she graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1935. Billie was a woman before her time. Longing to live in the big city, she moved to Lansing in 1935, where she lived in a boarding house, supporting herself, while working at Consumers Power. She then met the love of her life Weston Knaup, at a campus dance. After a three-year courtship, they were married in St. Johns in 1938. They shared many, many joyful years together and recently celebrated a wonderful 70th wedding anniversary in September.
She served as a volunteer in many capacities including the Girl Scouts and as a Grey Lady for St. Lawrence Hospital. She owned and operated her personnel business, Career Services, from 1965 to 1982. Her passion for gardening led her to be known as the “flower lady” in her neighborhood. She loved playing golf, being the proud owner of a hole in one, and cooking big delicious meals for her family and friends who she treasured and loved throughout her life. She was known for the great “twist” she had on her wonderful zucchini bread, which she gifted to friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her loving and truly faithful husband, Weston; her two daughters, Lois Jean (Theodore) Fuger of Spring Lake, and Nancy (Ron) Clevenger of Lansing; and five grandchildren, Lori (Kevin) Smith of Grand Rapids, Kurt (Mary) Lee of Arizona, Mark (Bekky) Lee of California, Dan (Cindy) Clevenger of Tennessee, and Casey (Jacqulyn) Clevenger of Mississippi. Her great-grandchildren number thirteen, with one great-great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her four sisters, Neva Pope, Bernice Rice, Blanche Vincent and Marie Olds. So beautiful inside and out, we will always be content to know our wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend will forever be alive in our hearts.
The family is planning a memorial service to be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of Ft. Myers, FL. www.hopehospice.org.
