Br. Anthony Eugene Jorae, C.S.C.
Br. Anthony Eugene Jorae, C.S.C., age 67, died peacefully at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio the morning of March 10, 2009. He was born in St. John’s, Michigan on August 12, 1941, the eldest of eleven children of Eugene and Bernice (Plunkett) Jorae. He was baptized at St. Isadore Church in Laingsburg, Michigan on August 24, 1941 and attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in St. John’s. He studied at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, graduating in 1960. That summer he made the decision to join the Brothers of Holy Cross and entered Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, Wisconsin.
He began his religious training at St. Joseph Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Indiana on January 25, 1961 and made his first vows as a Brother of Holy Cross on January 26, 1962. He started his undergraduate studies at St. Edward’s University in 1962, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. The next year he pronounced his final vows on January 26, 1968.
Because of his talent in science, he was selected to join the faculty at Holy Cross High School in River Grove, Illinois in the fall of 1964. His teaching and service were so outstanding that he remained there for a total of 40 years. He was a master teacher and a giant among the science faculty. As computer use developed in education, he became proficient in adapting computer technology to science classes and shared his talents with other classes. He received grants to study at the University of Oklahoma, Illinois Institute of Technology and Roosevelt University. Few brothers remain long enough at one school to teach more than one generation of students, but Br. Anthony taught many sons of former students. He loved camping and enjoyed many moments fishing. He led more than twenty student and faculty groups on camping/canoeing trips to the boundary waters area between Minnesota and Canada. One person who worked with him remarked that he didn’t know a single person who didn’t get along with Br. Anthony, he was always willing to help above and beyond his usual duties.
In 2005 Br. Anthony moved to Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio bringing his electronic and computer skills to work as the information technological wizard for classroom and administrative needs. During his illness he was a self-manager of his own care, driving himself to the chemo treatments. Br. Anthony was a quiet, retiring, and exceptionally capable teacher. He enriched both his students and fellow community members with his patience, smile, humor, pleasant disposition and a life of giving to others
