Co-workers usually took up a collection so that they could give the retiree a good send off. It was years later before the company started buying retirement watches for all of their employees. Today the retiree can also go down to the union hall and pick out a retirement gift from a wide selection of items. I ended up with two wrist watches which should insure that I’ll never be late for an appointment.
