Daale E. Maier
Daale E. Maier, 76, of East Lake, died December 1, 2008 at home.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May, 8, 2008 at 2:30 PM at Mount Rest Cemetery, St. Johns.
The family has entrusted local arrangements to Brigham Funeral Chapel, Thomas C. Maier, Director, Edmore, MI.
Daale E. Maier, 76, of East Lake, died Monday afternoon December 1, 2008 at home with his loving wife, Janice, at his side and the under the care of North Woods Hospice. He was born December 25, 1931 in Victor Township, Michigan, son of the late Frank & Mabel (McConnell) Maier, Daale was a 1949 graduate of St. Johns High School. Daale enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on December 9, 1954. On January 29, 1955, he married the former Janice Wilcox in Crystal and made St. Johns their home. Daale was employed at Michigan State University as a sheet metal journeyman for 25years until his retirement in 1994.
Daale and his wife Janice have been residents of McMillan since 1998 and he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the AmericanLegion Post #74 both of Newberry and the V.F.W. Post #8372 of Engadine. Daale was also a member of the Oddfellow Lodge, formerly served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #81 and former member of the Congregational Church all of St. Johns. In his leisure time, Daale enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his family. Besides his parents, Daale is preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his loving wife Janice of McMillan; son Brian of McMillan and daughter Denise (Tom) Pentecost of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren Katie (Danny) Longley, Mitch Pentecost, Cara Pentecost, Lincoln Maier and Cody Maier; several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church Furnace Fund or North Woods Hospice in memory of Daale E. Maier.
Frank J. Karek Jr.
Frank J. Karek Jr., 63 of Elsie, MI went peacefully to his heavenly home on May 4, 2009. Frank was born Sept 4, 1945 in St. Johns, the son of Frank J. and Stella (Gurski) Karek. He graduated from St. Johns High School and had worked as store manager for Kroger’s, owned and operated K’s Market in Laingsburg and later was a real estate broker for Caldwell-Banker Real Estate. Frank married Elaine Glanz on August 11, 1994 in Las Vegas. He enjoyed reading the Enquirer paper, Fox News, playing poker, being in Las Vegas and his Exotic Animal Farm, especially his Scottish Highland Cattle.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; son Ronald Karek of Kalamazoo, daughters Jessica Cole of Elsie, Laura (Marc Mason) Thrush of Maple Rapids, and Karen (Paul) Brown of Ovid; his mother, Stella Karek of St. Johns; 3 grandchildren; brothers, Thomas (Patricia) Karek and Robert (Linda) Karek both of St. Johns; sisters, Shirley (Roy) Davis, Jean (Jack) Cuthbert both of St. Johns, Mi and Sharon (Charles) Doolittle of St. Louis, MI; and his in-laws, Walter Helen Glanz of Vestaburg, MI. He was Preceded in death by his father, infant sister Mary Ann, daughter Katrina Karek and his first wife, Kathleen.
The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, Tuesday, May 5, 6-8 P.M. and on Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Robert Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery. Michael Kramer
Michael J. Kramer, age 69 of Pewamo died Sunday, May 3, 2009 after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on April 6, 1940 to Clement and B. Hyacinth (Blackmer) Kramer, Mike was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Pewamo, the Pewamo Knights of Columbus Post #8071 and the Hubbardston American Legion Post #182. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, and all sports, especially those played by his grandchildren. Mike will be sadly missed by his wife of 45 years, Kathryn (Fox) Kramer whom he married on June 29, 1963 in Fowler at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Also surviving are his children Michael (Leah) Kramer of Pewamo, Lori (Kevin) Schulte of Pewamo, Kelly Stewart of Pewamo, Shannon (Loren) Thelen of Pewamo, 11 grandchildren; siblings, Richard Kramer, Sr. Jean Kramer, OP and Linda Kramer; sister-in-law, Terrie Kramer, many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mike is preceded in death by his parents and brother Raymond Kramer.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 7, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo with the Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Tuesday and 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM Wednesday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler. A Rosary Service will be prayed at 8 PM Tuesday and 3 PM Wednesday and a Vigil Service will be held at 8 PM Wednesday. Margaret Ann McKay
Margaret Ann McKay of Lansing, born July 13, 1928 to John and Louise Bashore, died May 3, 2009 at the age of 80. Margaret was an avid MSU sports fan. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, and working in her yard. She was an active member of the Dewitt Moose Lodge where she liked playing in euchre tournaments as well as playing shuffle board with her friends. She also enjoyed dancing, polka was her favorite. She cherished spending time with her family, especially when she was able to prepare wonderful meals and baked goods for them. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jay F. McKay; brothers, Donald (Leatha), Galen (Lorine), Max R. (Alma), John Jr. (Elaine); and her sister, Jean Bashore.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Michael) Szkotnicki, of Williamston; son, Michael J. McKay of Dewitt; grandchildren Christine (Jeremy) Rahl-Letts, Jason (Carissa) Rahl, Sean McKay; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry J. (Carol) Bashore of Ovid, MI; and sister, Betty (Chester) Blank of Evart, MI.
Funeral services will be held for Margaret on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Haslett Community Church, 1427 Haslett Rd, Haslett, with the Rev. Kurt Kirchoff officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 5 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave, East Lansing. Vernon A. Martin
Vernon A. Martin Westphalia Age 84, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2009. He was born on December 13, 1924 in Ionia County the son of Ferdinand and Pauline (Arens) Martin. He was a member of St. Mary Parish and the Westphalia Knights of Columbus St. Jude Thaddeus Council. He worked for TRW in Portland for 32 years before retiring and loved farming. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Martin; 2 brothers-in-law, Anthony Simon and John Droste; and sister-in-law, Dolores Martin.
Surviving are his 2 brothers, Anthony Martin and Frederick (Genevieve) Martin; 6 sisters, Norma Simon, Millie Droste, Mary Ann (Roman) Koenigsknecht, Phyllis (Dick) Thelen, Linda (Paul) Armbrustmacher, and Janice (Alvin) Feldpausch; sister-in-law, Judy Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Cecilio Reyna presiding. Rite of Committal will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. A Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service will be held at 8 p.m. We thank Prestige Pines and McLaren Hospice Services for their loving care and gentle kindness. Dennis LeVeck
Dennis LeVeck died Friday, May 1, 2009, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 55. He was born June 13, 1953 in Lansing, Michigan the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Pierce) LeVeck. Dennis was a graduate of St. Johns High School, Class of 1972, was an avid golfer and sports fan, especially the MSU Spartans and any of the professional Detroit teams. Dennis is the owner/operator of LeVeck’s Small Engine Sales and Service which he opened in the spring of 1983. On November 24, 1973 he married Suzanne Horcha in Owosso, Michigan and she survives him.
Also surviving are two sons, Jason (Jennifer) LeVeck and Matthew LeVeck all of St. Johns; a granddaughter Lauren Audrey LeVeck; step-brother, Tim (Kelly) LeVeck and sons of St. Johns and the family who raised Dennis, parents, Joe and Margaret Yurek; sister Carol (Jerry) Mitchell all of St. Johns; brothers John (Holly) Yurek of Fairbanks, AK and Dan (Lydia) Yurek of St. Joseph, MI; parents-in-law, John (Betty) Horcha of Durand; sisters-in-law, Johnette (George) Osborne of Owosso, Marshon (Mike) Bowman of Corunna; brothers-in-law, James Graham of Tampa, FL, David (Judy) Graham of Owosso and Jeffrey Horcha and family of Durand. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence LeVeck Jr. and John LeVeck.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Rev. Matthew Olson officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of donor’s choice.
Richard “Rick” M. Cascaddan
Richard “Rick” M. Cascaddan, age 67, of Ashley, MI died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 in Gratiot County, Michigan.
A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Ithaca Chapel on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. Lindy Cascaddan will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 5-8 PM. at Smith Family Funeral Homes in Ithaca.
Rick was born in Clare County, Michigan on October 5, 1941, the son of Marvin G. and Teasil (Dunkle) Cascaddan. He was married to Gale Eaton on March 21, 1964 in Harrison, MI. Rick has been a resident of Ashley for the past 38 years. He was an avid hunter, trap shooter, outdoorsman, and loved to travel. He loved to play with his grandkids and spend time with his wife and family. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and being with his friends. He retired from General Motors after 36 years of service. Rick was a member of Ashley Sportsman’s Club, and a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife Gale Cascaddan of Ashley, MI, his mother Teasil Cascaddan of Ashley, MI, 2 sons; Nicholas and Joanna Cascaddan of Ithaca, MI, Lindy and Shelly Cascaddan of West Haven, UT, daughter Carrie and Ryan Kirkpatrick of Perrinton, MI, 10 grandchildren; Janey, Dillon, Bethany, Lauren, Baylee, Lindsey, Olivia, Nolan, Tyler, and Trista, sister Judith and James Laplow of Grand Rapids, MI, sister Ruth Ann and Dale Laplow of Grand Rapids, MI, brother Norman and Trudy Cascaddan of Eaton Rapids, MI, sister Jean and Craig Thomas of New Palastine, IN, and brother in law Mike and Sherry Eaton of Ione, OR. He was preceded in death by his father, son Christopher Cascaddan, sister Ruby Cascaddan, and brother in law Edward Eaton Jr.
