More curves than a Circus Lady – Trick Carpenters
by Barry Bauer
Long before there was a Performance Shell there was a Band Shell (shown below) being built in August, 1939.
On Friday morning Floyd Patterson and his associates, Nelson Jolly and Carl Krum, started building this spherical shell at the City Park. “It’s got more curves than a circus lady,” Floyd grumbled; but Tuesday evening the work was completed. The shell will be used first during the coming 4-H Fair and for many programs in the future.

The quarter-sphere was accomplished by building 20 laminated rafters on the platform recently moved from the weeded section of the Park to a spot just south of the tennis courts. Behind the scaffolding (lower center) is Herb Splane who spent his Saturday vacation helping carpenters.
