Glen Lewis worked in Maintenance at Federal-Mogul as a machine repairman. He’s working on what appears to be a leveling roll unit.
Leveling rolls were used mostly on washer presses. Depending on the characteristics of the coil of strip, the leveling rolls could be set to either make the strip go down or go up in order to achieve a flat part after it was stamped out.
Washers were required to go through a parallel plates gage set a certain thickness apart, for example, .088. The customer didn’t want the part to wear more in one spot than the rest of the washer.
