To the best of my knowledge Mike Asher was the first precision grinder apprentice in the Toolroom at Federal-Mogul. Before that the fairly new apprenticeship program was exclusively for toolmakers.
Mike came into the Toolroom off the floor. He ran the Air Shoe press that I was very much involved with. I came off the floor too except I started as an “upgrader” and not an apprentice. No problem; I made it to the position as toolmaker at the same time the new apprentices did. I was aware that it caused hard feelings with those guys.
Today at Federal-Mogul there is no such thing as an upgrader.
Mike had a commercial pilot’s license; but for reasons probably known only to him and his wife, he didn’t pursue it. Mike retired on November 1, 2000.
