Welding training at Baker
Baker’s Business and Corporate Services Division is offering technical training in December.
“Fundamentals of Welding” is an introductory session that focuses on safety and provides hands-on practice in shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, torch cutting, and plasma cutting. This class will meet December 1 and Dec. 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Baker College’s Center for Technical Studies Welding Lab, Room 1641. Cost is $145.
“Fundamentals of Stick Welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding-SMAW)” will discuss safety and provide hands-on practice in shielded metal arc welding, torch cutting, and plasma cutting. Welding will be performed on mild steel-plate using E7018 and E7024 electrodes in a variety of weld positions. This two-part workshop is scheduled for December 8 and 10 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Baker College’s Center for Technical Studies Welding Lab, Room 1641. Cost is $145.

New Project Management training at Baker
Baker’s Business and Corporate Services Division is offering new technical training in December.
“Project Management on a Budget” will provide an overview of practical, proven project management techniques. Training will include valuable and flexible tools that you can use immediately to ensure the success of any project in any type of organization. This seminar provides a foundation to manage each stage of the project life cycle, work within organizational and cost constraints, set goals tied directly to stakeholder needs, get the most from your project management team, and utilize low cost, everyday project management tools to get the work done within budget. Case studies will be utilized to demonstrate the power of project management in the real world.
Presenter Thomas Bartholomew is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He completed his Master’s Certification in Project Management at George Washington University and his Project Management Professional Certification at the Project Management Institute. Mr. Bartholomew holds a Master of Science degree in Management from Walsh College, and brings practical experience to the classroom from his private sector work as a design engineer and supervisor, program manager, project manager, and business owner.
This workshop is scheduled for December 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bentley Campus. Cost is $85.

Baker offers training for community
Baker College of Owosso is offering a variety of workshops for the community in December.
“Introduction to Grant Writing” is a two-part workshop designed for the novice proposal (grant) writer who wants to learn how to prepare and write a grant proposal.
Presented with a practical, hands-on approach to proposal writing, this workshop includes review of actual grant applications and proposals, and leads grant seekers through activities to develop, write and critique their own proposal components.
Content will focus on non-profit, faith-based and government organizations. (Participants may bring a specific grant application to work with, or may use the application packet provided during the session.) Scheduled for Dec. 2 and Dec. 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Bentley Campus. Cost is$125.
“Senior Savvy: Beginning Computers” is designed specifically for seniors (55+) and introduces new computer users to basic concepts and skills for personal computers. Activities focus on how to power up and shut down; use the mouse and keyboard; use menus and ribbons; open and close programs; create, save and print files; and how to find help. Scheduled for December 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Bentley Campus. Cost is $30.
“Advanced QuickBooks 2009″ will prepare small business personnel to customize and create new reports in QuickBooks, create a secure environment, set up budgets, and utilize QuickBooks letters. (Prior experience with QuickBooks is required.) Scheduled for December 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Bentley Campus. Cost is $125.
December workshops also include a variety of Microsoft Office programs to help support your business and home activities. Workshops include keyboarding, Internet and E-mail fundamentals, and basic and intermediate levels of Word and Excel 2007. Training in Microsoft Office 2003 applications is also still available for groups.
