While many family farmers recognize the importance of ownership and management transition, few know where to start in developing a comprehensive succession plan. Planning for succession – including simple estate planning – can be a daunting task. It requires time, resources, and ultimately, difficult decisions. However, broken into manageable steps, succession planning can be achieved.
Clinton Memorial Hospital Foundation offers a fall estate planning seminar that focuses on farm succession planning. This no-cost seminar is scheduled Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clinton Commons, 1105 S. Scott Road in St. Johns. Light refreshments will be served.
All key family members impacted by management succession and asset transition can benefit from this valuable information about processes to help families with transition of ownership and management from one generation to the next. Each family who attends will receive a copy of the book, Planning the Future of Your Farm. This workbook is designed to assist with maintaining family farm production as it passes into the next generation.
The Dec. 4 event begins with a presentation called Strategies for Successful Family Business Succession by Luis de la Garza, a Lookout Consulting Senior Business Consultant. In addition, a panel of professionals will share their expertise on the estate planning process as well as their insights on understanding individual, family and business needs. The panel of insurance, investments, trust, law, accounting, tax, succession planning consulting, real estate, lending, and charitable giving professionals also will review best practices in family communications and development of next steps in building business succession plans.
