Nelson Scholarship event is Dec. 5
This is just a quick reminder to set aside the date Saturday December 5, 2009 from 7 pm to midnight for a night to celebrate the life of PFC Andrew Nelson. We will be having a local band, Conchord, playing for your listening and dancing pleasure, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and other door prizes throughout the night. We will also have a raffle for one week at a Wydham Resorts condo anywhere in the continental U.S. or Hawaii (airfare not included). Tickets for the event are $12 each and can be purchased in advance at The Cellular Connection (Formerly Sunfire Wireless) next to Little Caesars in St. Johns, and tickets will also be available at the door. There will be snack type food and soda. BYOB if you want alcohol. We have some special guest speakers lined up including Andrews platoon leader from when he was in Iraq.
In the past 2 1/2 years we have awarded six $1,000 scholarships to St. Johns High School Seniors. Each year we give $1,000 to one boy swimmer and $1,000 to one girl swimmer that has at least a 3.0 GPA and shows great leadership qualities and has a positive mental attitude. With your help we can continue to award these scholarships for many years to come, and keep Andrews memory alive. Our goal is to eventually raise $70,000 so that the scholarships will work off of the interest alone, and that way the scholarships will be self sustaining and go on forever. So far we have raised about $25,000 of the $70,000, so we still have a ways to go. If you are unable to make it to the event but would still like to donate to the scholarship fund, you can send your donation to:
Andrew Nelson Memorial Foundation

We thank you in advance, and we look forward to seeing you there!

MMDHD thanks community partners
The Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD), in conjunction with several community organizations and partners, conducted a Novel H1N1 Influenza mass-vaccination clinic on Saturday, November 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the St. Johns Middle School. The clinic targeted children 6 months through 24 years of age but also served those who were pregnant, household members of a baby less than 6 months of age and childcare providers of a baby less than 6 months of age. In seven hours, a total of 1,074 H1N1vaccinations were administered to residents throughout Clinton County.
A second H1N1mass-vaccination clinic was held Saturday, November 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the DeWitt High School. The clinic was open to pregnant women and household contacts of pregnant women, household members and caregivers of infants younger than 6 months of age, health care and emergency medical services personnel, people ages 6 months to 24 years, and people ages 25 through 64 years of age with chronic heath disorders or compromised immune systems. In seven hours, a total of 1,163 vaccinations were administered to residents throughout Clinton County.
As the Health Officer and Medical Director for MMDHD, we wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the many partners and volunteers who helped to make the November 7 and November 14 mass-vaccination clinics a success. Key partners include: Clinton Area Ambulance Service, Clinton County Central Dispatch, Clinton County Emergency Management, Clinton County Regional Educational Service Agency Allied Health and Criminal Justice Students, Clinton County School Safety Coordinator, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton Memorial Hospital, DeWitt Public Schools, DeWitt Township Police Department, Montcalm Community College Nursing Students, St. Johns Police Department, St. Johns Public Schools, St. Johns and DeWitt student volunteers and Village of Ovid.
The clinics ran smoothly throughout the day due to the work of MMDHD staff and community partners. It is an honor to live in and work in a community where people come first and partnerships make a difference. Thank you to all for helping to protect our community and our children.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Singh, M.A.
