January was designated as the time for our 3rd through 6th grade mentees in the Key Mentoring program to thank their mentors for helping them grow through out the year.
To support the 2010 National Thank Your Mentor month, the Clinton County Key Mentoring Program’s mentees decorated a flower pot and planted seeds in it then they gave them to their mentor. The purpose of the flower pot was to represent how, just like a flower needs water to grow, a mentee needs a mentor to help them grow successfully. This project was a big success. Along with the flower pots the mentees gave their mentors a thank you card for taking time this year to be their mentor. Ashley, Cory and Preston, mentees at Gateway Elementary were very excited to make the flower pots. They all love art and thought that the projects where something they could put their own creativity on. They hope the flower pot project would always remind their mentor of how much fun they have had together.
In 2008-2009 93.8% of mentees in the Key Mentoring Program felt more confident because of the relationship with their mentor. In addition, 94.1% felt it was important to help others because of their mentor and involvement in the program. Key Mentoring has also increased the sense of support with 94% feeling as if there are adults and teenagers who care about them.
Our mentees need positive compassionate influence everyday from ordinary people who can make a difference in their life. Learn more about how you can become a mentor or support the program. Mentors and supporters don’t need special skills–all they need to do is care about kids and are willing to volunteer about an hour a week.
