Gayla Faye Walters

Gayla F. Walters, age 72 of Laingsburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Laingsburg Chapel with Pastor John Walworth officiating. The family will meet with friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Laingsburg Cemetery.

Gayla was born on May 19, 1938 in St. Johns, MI, the daughter of Earl Birdsley and Beryl Pilmore. She was a graduate of St. Johns High School. On December 29, 1956 she married Donald Walters in St. Johns, MI. Gayla retired from Michigan State University after 30 years where she was a secretary in the Micro Biology Dept. She loved to garden and make quilts.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years Donald, two children; Patricia Ann (Ken) Cochrane of Laingsburg and Patrick Walters of Laingsburg, grandchildren; Jennifer (Bradley)Jodway, Mereta(Randon)Slider, Patrick, Adam, Melissa(Stephen)Torres, Shannon Cochrane and (Jerrod)Haindel, and Shayne, great-grandchildren, Brayden, Deacon, Rylie, Teagan and Kayden, brother, Jack Birdsley and sisters, June Young and Shirley Birdsley. She was predeceased by her sister Jean Vitous.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or Paws For A Cause.

Donald B. Smith

Donald B. Smith, 76 of St. Johns, MI died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Sparrow Hospital. Don was born on March 22, 1935 in Ovid, MI the son of Harold S. and Muriel (Holland) Smith. He graduated from Ovid High School in 1953. On June 30, 1962 he married Joanne Kovacic in Owosso, MI. Don was a veteran of the US Army, and worked at General Motors as a tool and die maker for 40 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, loved boating and pulling the kids skiing.

He is survived by his wife Joanne; sons, Tim H. (Jennifer) Smith of St. Johns, Steven P. Smith of Lansing, and Dan L. (Sarah) Smith of Freeland, MI; daughters, Julie (Jon) Harding of New Jersey and Leslie J. (Dan) Bragdon of DeWitt, MI; 6 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren; brother Darrell C. (Nancy) Smith of Ovid and sister, Kathryn (Jim) Horak of Owosso; mother in law Ann Kovacic. Sister in law, Janet (Charlie) Smith, brothers in law Augie (Shirley) Kovacic, Alan Kovacic and Art (Kim) Kovacic and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Haroldene Bruinsma, father in law Gus Kovacic and sister in law, Jean Kovacic.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 2-8 P.M. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Catholic School Education Fund.

Marilynn J. Hornbeck

Marilynn J. Hornbeck, 76 of Ovid, MI died Friday, April 22, 2011 at Sparrow Clinton Hospital. Marilynn was born on February 27, 1935 the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Taylor) Wilkins. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and on March 19, 1955 she married Harold D. Hornbeck in Lansing. Marilynn was a member of Grove Bible Church, a foster parent for over 25 years to more than 75 children, Michigan Foster Parents Assn, scrapbooking, avid CURVES member and loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband Harold; sons, Darryl (Teri) Hornbeck of Alaska, Kevin Hornbeck of Lansing, Dwayne (Marilyn) Hornbeck of Ovid, Ralph Hornbeck of Ovid and Timothy (Lueann) Hornbeck of Florida; daughter Valerie (Rob) Nethaway of Ovid; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Alice (Gene) Hayward of Eaton Rapids, MI and Ruth Ann Dodge of Holt, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Debra Hornbeck, brother Ralph Watkins, sister Janita and grandson Jerry Nethaway.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home St. Johns, MI on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Tim Van Loh officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Lansing. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, 2-8 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or Grove Bible Church.
