Thank You
Thank you to all the people who helped to make the Library’s Holiday Programs a success. Without your generous donation of time these popular, quality programs would not be possible. Santa was able to visit with 259 very happy children this year due to the hard work of these dedicated individuals.
The Season of Giving
Many avenues for gift giving are available at Briggs Public Library. Our Mitten Tree still has room for new purchased or handmade mittens, hats and scarves. The Toys for Tots Box at the library is emptied frequently, so there is always room for more. For the “hard-to-buy-for” people on your list, remember that the Library is glad to receive gifts in honor or memory of individuals. If your giving needs require tax benefits, please consider the Library. Gifts to Briggs Public Library carry the same tax advantages as gifts to colleges and public broadcasting. For more information, contact your tax preparer.
Coming Soon
Briggs Public Library in conjunction with a number of other libraries in the White Pine Library Cooperative are in the final planning stages with a company called Overdrive to offer our patrons access to downloadable audio books. Stay tune for further details on the program and when it will be available to Briggs Public Library patrons.

Thanksgiving recipes and Christmas decorations are making the local scene, but members of the Briggs Library Foundation are already into next April. That’s when a prominent television personality, award winning chef-restaurateur and cookbook author will visit St. Johns as guest speaker at the Foundation’s fourth annual Honors and Authors night.
Eric Villegas, who from 1987 to 2007 owned and operated two of mid-Michigan’s most unique award winning regional restaurants – Dusty’s Wine Bar and Restaurant Villegas – will not only speak at the event, but will conduct a special food preparation display along with a book signing. While details for the event are yet to be completed, Tuesday April 27 has been confirmed as the date.
Since debuting on Michigan Public Television in 2001, Fork in the Road with Eric Villegas has offered viewers recipes, cooking tips and culinary history based on the Great Lakes food scene. In late 2007, the show began national distribution on PBS along with his companion cookbook.
Villegas’ scheduled appearance, arranged for by board member Blake Anthes, will continue the level of quality speakers consistent with the Foundation’s annual honors night. As in the past, the special event is designed to recognize supporters of the foundation and to bring awareness to the Foundation’s efforts at funding a long-term endowment program for Briggs Public Library.

Eric Villegas, TV personality, chef and cookbook author will be the featured speaker next April at the annual Honors and Authors night. Blake Anthes, center, along with board members Sara Morrison, left, and Donna Apostol review the service agreement confirming Villegas’ appearance. Morrison is director of Briggs Public Library.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
From now until Monday, November 16, Briggs Public Library would like your help in filling up our lobby display case with non-perishable food items to donate to the local food bank. Bring your canned and dried good to the circulation desk and we will place them in the display case. Please note: cans and boxes are preferred over glass containers. Food expiration dates will be observed. We hope to fill our entryway display case to capacity by Monday, November 16, in time for Thanksgiving distribution. What a great way to teach our children to care for our friends and neighbors in need.
Mitten Tree
The Annual Briggs Public Library Mitten Drive Tree has arrived to receive new mittens or gloves (Homemade or Store-bought). Scarves and hats are also welcome. The collection is for all ages, adult or child. Items received will be donated to local charity organizations. Last year we were able to distribute 258 pairs of mittens, gloves or socks, plus 211 head warmers and 93 scarves to five local charities. All were most appreciative of your holiday kindness. Cutting Costs
Public Libraries make good sense for everyone on a tight budget. What makes Libraries work is the full cooperation of all the users in the system. You can borrow books, CDs, DVDs, and more at Briggs Public Library for free, as long as you return them on time and in good condition. Late materials, lost or damaged items all cost the Library (and you) money. As state funding recedes and local dollars become tighter, it becomes all the more important to use Library materials wisely. If Briggs Public Library owns an item, please use it rather than duplicating the loaning process by using Interloan resources. Please use all borrowed materials responsibly and carefully, extending the times each book, recording, or movie can be reused. Such precautions could save local libraries several thousand dollars a year, helping each library maintain the valued services and materials we routinely have offered. You can help cut costs at Briggs Public Library with clean hands, gentle use, and a good calendar faithfully followed. Responsible cooperation is the best return for the good of our community.

Executive Order
Governor Granholm issued Executive Order No. 2009 – 36 this week, eliminating the Library of Michigan. The tasks of the State Library will be ‘redistributed’ to seven different departments and two commissions. The physical facility is to be repurposed for a new “Michigan Center for Innovation and Reinvention Board.” Concerns remain for local public libraries that, as of October 1, 2009, we will be competing with educational needs for the underfunded tax dollars that provide for Interloan, MeLCat, Library Cooperatives, and the operational dollars that keep computer stations, materials, and local services up to date. This puts the public library system in Michigan back 30 years at a time when demands are higher than ever for technology, materials, expertise, and programs.
For more information and to express your opinion of this governmental change. please contact Senator Alan Cropsey (517) 373-3760, e-mail: senacropsey@senate.michigan.gov. You can also contact Representative Paul Opsommer 517-373-1778, e-mail: paulopsommer@house.mi.gov with your concerns.

Maintenance Projects
Activity is underway @ Briggs Public Library to maintain the physical structure. Corrections for weaknesses in insulation, siding breakages, door and window replacements of original components are underway. Contractor Jerald Frazier working with Streamline Enterprises, Inc. has already hauled supplies, and siding removal will be starting shortly. Also under consideration is the heating and cooling of the Library in light of costly repairs, desire to be economically sound, and green environmental impacts. As with all capital improvements, the Library Board plans in advance, setting aside funds so that current operations are not impacted. The Board follows a standard bidding process based on professional proposals. We apologize for public inconvenience during these maintenance procedures and look forward to continued, uninterrupted service.

Free Park Passes for Michigan Readers
Looking for ways to save some “green” while being “green”? Then visit the Briggs Library this summer.
Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has partnered with the Library of Michigan, Macy’s, and the Hammock Company to announce the Park & Read program.
Park & Read allows library-card holders the ability to “check-out” a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This is a $6 savings and free access to the more than 500 events taking place in local parks this summer.
Many parks will have a hammock available for Park & Read participants to borrow while on-site for the day so they can fully enjoy a great book in Michigan’s great outdoors.
“We want everyone in Michigan to know what a fantastic resource their local park can be,” says Maia Stephens, Recreation Programmer for the DNR. “Because the program is free, everyone can now enjoy all the free activities available in Michigan State Parks and Recreation Areas. Besides, what’s more relaxing than a day at the beach with a good book?”
Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan’s state parks. Hammocks are subject to availability. This program runs through September 25.

Art comes alive with Briggs’ Honors & AuthorsArt came to life at this year’s Honors and Authors Night, hosted by the Briggs Public Library Foundation.
Award-winning illustrator Gijsbert “Nick” van Frankenhuyzen thrilled guests at the fourth annual event with a visual display of the process he uses to create paintings that become real life illustrations in children’s books like the popular Legends series and the acclaimed Hazel Ridge Farms series.
Nick and his wife, Robbyn, provided commentary during the presentation that featured a slide-show in addition to a special DVD about Jackson the owl – the hero of sorts in “Adopted by An Owl” that was written by Robbyn and illustrated by Nick.
The couple signed books at the conclusion of Honors & Authors that also included an overview of the Foundation by John Sirrine, and information about Briggs Public Library by its director, Sara Morrison.

The Briggs Library Foundation was organized in 2005. Its primary mission is to ensure a stable base of funding for the Library that will help support continuing growth for future generations of area residents.
For information about the Foundation, or to make a tax-deductible donation, call Briggs Library at (989) 224-4702 or visit www.briggspubliclibrary.org.

Briggs Foundation hosts Honors & Authors NightNick van Frankenhuyzen is speaker at May 12 event
Award-winning illustrator, Gijsbert “Nick” van Frankenhuyzen, is the featured speaker for the Fourth Annual Honors & Authors Night, hosted by the Briggs Public Library Foundation.

The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, May 12 at Clinton Commons in St. Johns, and includes light hors d’oeuvres and beverages prior to Nick’s presentation. A tax-deductible donation of $35 per person is requested, benefiting the Foundation.
A nationally recognized artist, Nick will narrate a PowerPoint presentation on the process he uses to create images for children’s books like the popular Legends series and the acclaimed Great Lakes Regions series. He will have books and prints for sale, and will sign books brought in by guests.
Born in the Netherlands, Nick immigrated to Michigan in 1976 and worked as art director for the Michigan Natural Resources magazine until 1993 when the family’s Hazel Ridge Workshop & Gallery in Bath Township became a full-time venture for the self-employed artist. That 40-acre farm with its fields, woodlots and wetlands has served as an inspiration for many of Nick’s paintings, and for books authored by his wife, Robbyn.
Notably among the couple’s literary works are Adopted by an Owl, winner of the 2003 Great Lakes Great Book award, and their latest release, Itsy Bitsy and Teeny Weeny – a true story about the bond between an orphaned fawn and lamb raised as “siblings” by the van Frankenhuyzens.
Other recent books that contain Nick’s illustrations are Bambi’s First Day: A Mother’s Love, and W is for Wolf: A Dog Alphabet that’s part of the award-winning Alphabet series published by Sleeping Bear Press.
In addition to van Frankenhuyzen’s presentation, Honors and Authors also includes recognition of Brigg’s Library volunteers and patrons by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
The Briggs Library Foundation was organized in 2005. Its primary mission is to ensure a stable base of funding for the Library that will help support continuing growth for future generations of area residents.

Circulation Revisions
Two months ago the Library Board initiated the concept of circulation limits to protect Library resources and improve the successful return of items by Library Patrons. Several of you took the time to voice your concerns, and the Library Board listened. At their April 9 meeting, the Board increased the per card limit from 15 items per user card to 25 items. Concurrently, Library Staff reviewed Library Procedures regarding card registration and have started registering children as young as 12 months with the signature of a legal adult who accepts responsibility for any fees charged to the User’s account. Such fees are usually for damage, loss, or late return. Briggs Public Library Board and Staff appreciate hearing your concerns so that Library services may improve to meet your needs.

The White Pine Library Cooperative has launched a Public Service campaign designed to increase awareness of services available through local public libraries, including Briggs Public Library in St. Johns, DeWitt Public Library, Maple Rapids Public Library, Ovid Public Library and Elsie Public Library. Central to the campaign is a new patron-friendly website with a memorable URL: FuelYourMind.org/
WPLC Director Bryon Sitler says he is looking forward to the anticipated growth in library patronage. “Many people hear ‘library’ and think ‘books.’ Well, we haven’t done away with the books, but today’s libraries are so much more, and that’s the message we want to send. We want people from all of our local communities to know these services are here, waiting to be used.”
WPLC wants to stress to citizens that these services have all been paid for by hard-earned millages and they should be used… services including Internet access on library-owned
computers as well as Wireless Internet, newly-released movies on DVD, books on CD, classes – even the ability to use your Library from your home! Log on and Fuel Your Mind!
The White Pine Library Cooperative serves libraries in Arenac, Clare, Clinton, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Iosco, Midland, Ogemaw, Saginaw, Sanilac, and Tuscola counties. Our mission is to coordinate and provide high-quality, cost-effective services that will strengthen member libraries so they can meet changing patron and community needs. MeLCat Interruption
On Wednesday, April 15, the Michigan Electronic Library Catalog and some of the Databases will be off-line due to technical repairs. The Library of Michigan regrets this interruption of service which will impact searching, borrowing, and renewing of MeLCat materials, will impact both Libraries and public access as well as creating inaccessibility to a portion of the State subscribed databases links. The State of Michigan anticipates that service will be restored on Thursday, April 16.
