Rosie is a spayed female Beagle born in 2006. She weights 23 pounds and is a beautiful, delightful, gentle, darling little beagle girl who is learning all the comforts of living indoors as part of a family. You see, she came here from her family who thought she would hunt; but I didn’t so she lived in an outdoor pen and was never allowed inside.

Rosie was very scared when she came to her foster home, but with a lot of TLC she has come very far in learning how to live in a home. She enjoys other dogs. She is great with children but could become anxious if they became rowdy. She has done well with housetraining, but we recommend a fenced yard. She is using a crate that should continue to help with training.

This is Hobo, and he is a neuterd male Beagle. He was born in 2006, and he weighs 28 pounds.

If Hobo were a human, he would be a fireman. He is adventurous, smart, friendly, athletic, outgoing and likes to work and play hard. However he still has a mischievous side and needs to be kept busy, or he will find his own activities.

On the plus side Hobo is housebroken and crate trained. He would love a family who will spend time playing with and exercising him, training him and including him in the family activities. He would need a fenced yard (not invisible) so that he can exercise and play safely.

Hobo loves to play with other dogs and would be in heaven with another active dog. He can even tolerate cats.

Able was born 2008, is spayed and weighs 29 pounds. She is an Australian Cattle Dog/Terrier mix. Able is ENERGETIC, but in a good way of course. She is very smart and enjoys learning new things for treats, watching tv, car rides.

Hannah is a spayed female American Eskimo. She was born in 2001, and she weighs 22 pounds. When her foster mom found her, she was in a little tiny cage in a not-so-nice shelter.

No one knows exactly why she was there. She is a very good girl. She doesn’t bark, she potties outside, and she just loves to be petted and brushed. Mom says that she walks great on a leash, and that she’s very sweet and gentle, not like other Eskies–she’s very laid back.

Hannah is housetrained, never jumps up on the furniture; and a cozy dog bed on the floor is just fine with her. She has had her teeth just cleaned, and they are pearly whites; but she had some of them pulled, so now the pain is gone.

Lady was tossed out of her home with her brother when her human mom had to go to a nursing home. She is a very affectionate girl with lots of energy. Dutchess and Ozzie are a pair of delightful beagles who are looking for a home where they can stay together forever. Dutchess was born in 2000 and Ozzie in 2001. They are spayed and neutered with a weight of 28 pounds for Dutchess and 32 pounds for Ozzie.

Ozzie is the more affectionate and easy going of the pair. He loves attention from everyone, and his devotion to Dutchess is the sweetest thing to see. They two grew up in the same family from the time they were puppies; but due to a child who developed allergies, they could not keep the beagles. These two kids are truly delightful and a joy to live with.

Meet Stella, a German Shepard Mix. She is a spayed female born in 2007 and weighing 60 pounds. She is very energetic and playful. She loves to go for walks, ride in the car, play fetch and go to the dog park. She eeally LOVES toys and would like to have a lot of toys in her new home. Stella loves everyone she meets and is very sweet and loves to please. She is also a great snuggler. She’s been ththrough a basic obedience class and is housebroken and crate trained.

Stella would love to go to a home with another dog because she loves to play, but she should not go to a home with younger children because of her size.

Stellla does have a mild hip dysplasis but doesn’t let it slow her down a bit. She does need regular exercise, a soft bed and can never be allowed to become overweight. This is common for German Shepards, so we suggest that you look into this before adopting her to make sure she is the right dog for you.

Meet Bonzai, a Corgi/Shiba Inu/Jack Russell Terrier mix. His date of birth is 2007, and he is a neutered male weighing 23 pounds.

Bonzai’s foster mom says that he must be part goofball too. He is extremely high energy and needs a lot of attention and exercise to keep him busy. A fenced yard is a must because he loves to run around outside, play with toys, go for walks, ride in the car, be with his people; and he LOVES to play with other dogs. He doesn’t like my crate too much but needs to be crated when left alone.

He has worked on some training but needs to work on his manners. He knows “sit”,”down”,”come”,”off”,”wait”,”drop it” and “crate”.

Bonzai has had a problemd with being possessive with his food and is getting better, therefore he will not be adopted to a family with young children.

My name is Butch and I am from Tennessee, sent to Michigan to find my new home. I arrived on a plane and boy, I am big stuff now.

Butch is a Shih Tzu mix neutered male weighing 14.5 pounds. The best part is that he is housebroken and gets along most of the time with other dogs. He does guard my food dish, so he needs help with that. There were a lot of them where he came from, and the care was not up to snuff.

Meet Austin, a Labrador Retriever born in 2008 and weighing 70 pounds. He has been neutered, housebroken and crate trained.

Here’s Austin’s story. He was picked up as a stray and has been wondering why no one came to claim him. He is a good boy and doesn’t know what he did that his family didn’t make an effort to find him.

Austin is an exuberant dog that loves people and other dogs who would love to have a buddy to play with — but not sure about cats yet. He loves to run, so he would need a secure fenced yard and would NOT be reliable off leash. He is eager to learn.

Meet our pet of the week, Booker. He is a neutered male Shih Tzu and weighs about 18 lbs.

He started to gain weight and scratching a lot when the vet diagnosed him with Thyroid Disease. Now he takes little pills (not very expensive) every day and is getting his energy back.

Booker is housebroken and does fine in a crate. He really doesn’t need to be crated, but he doesn’t mind taking naps in there during the day.

Booker gets along with other dogs, and he really likes people.

Our Pet of the Week is Shelley, a Beagle/Australian Cattle Dog mix. She was born in 2005 and is a spayed female weighing 38 pounds. She is crate trained and housebroken and up to date on her shots.

She is the all-around great dog — smart, silly, loving and sweet. She is great around other dogs and cats once she warms up to them and they warm up to her. Shelley is a true “wiggle butt” and gets really excited when you shower her with attention.

Shelley loves to play in the yard and would prefer a forever home with a fenced yard. She is probably fine with older children; but because of her excitement, she might be too much for small ones under 10. Shelley has taken a pill once a week to help with a bladder probelm she has had since she was a pup.

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself”

Meet Pookie. She is a 6 year old ShihTzu who weighs 21 pounds.

Here’s her story:
- She is spayed and UPD on all vaccinations
- She is microchipped, and her teeth have been cleaned
- She has had some masses removed from around her eye; these were benign
- She does have dry eye and needs a daily eye drop to keep the eye moisturized, but she’s used to it.
- She is housetrained, low energy and likes attention when you have time to give it. She does not require a crate but will go in one sometimes to take a nap.
- Best of all, she can be trusted to have full reign of the house.

Saleen is an American Pitbull Terrier mix. She is a spayed female, weighing in at 45 pounds and up to date on her shots. Saleen is going to fill out to be a Gorgeous little pit girl.

She has a friendly playful temperament and aims to please. And she’s a quick learner. You see, she is already house trained and crate trained. She’s even microchipped and just has the whole She-Bang.

The most ideal situation for Saleen would be:
- Parents who can be home as often as possible or at least return home on lunch break for her to go potty
- A home with a fenced in yard to keep her safe, and keep her on a leash outside the fenced area.
- Preferably a family with older kids and maybe even another male dog.
- A family who is active and will get me out to socialize and not be fearful of things when she grows up.
- A lot of chew toys too, please, please!!

Obedience training would be good as would a home without cats. This is a must.

She was put outside in the freezing snow and a nice man found her lying in the street half frozen. Saleen just needs a nice loving home to be happy and grow old.

Meet Peanut

This is Peanut and he is a Toy Poodle. He was born in 1999, is a neutered male and weighs 8 pounds. He hasn’t had the best life and is very insecure because of it. You see….he has never, ever in his entire life had someone say ” I am going to love you forever and nothing is going to come between us.

Here’s the deal:

I always want to be loved on
I always want you to be proud of me
I always want to be picked up and carried around
I always want to sleep in the warmth of your arms and bed
I always want to be there for you. Always.

Peanut has Luxating Patella’s which is a fancy word for “his knees give out on him”, so he will need joint supplements the rest of his life. There’s lots of good stuff about him too! He is completely housetrained, up to date on all his shots, and he’s even micro chipped. He never makes a mess and will not chew on things. He’s also crate trained.

Meet Peanut

Meet Peanut who was born in 2005. She is a spayed female Border Collie/Terrier/Beagle mix and weighs 33 pounds. She is an active and smart girl and has no trouble finding things to keep her busy. Peanut is very athletic and loves activities like playing fetch, going for walks; and she thinks she would like jogging too. One thing she really needs is a fence over 4 feet high.

Speaking of loving, the way she shows her people that she loves them is by licking their ears or nose. She has learned lots about getting along with her doggie friends, and she plays much nicer now.

Peanut is a very loving and loyal dog, and she would so much love a family who will do fun things with her and keep teaching her how to be the best dog she can be.

Rocky came to the rescue from a Lake Odessa auction where it was questionable what type of place he would end up if we had not saved him.

Rocky is a very social little gelding with the other full sized horses. He doesn’t know he is a small guy, and seems to be afraid of nothing. He is about 5years old and 36″ tall.

Meet Buck, a Labrador Retriever mix. His date of birth is 12-2007, and he weighs 72 pounds. He has been neutered.

He was left at animal control by his owners because he chewed on something he wasn’t suppose to chew on, he but has not chewed on anything since being in foster care.

He is very friendly and gets along great with other dogs he has met. He is learning basic commands and to walk on a leash, but he would benefit from a basic obedience class.

Meet Ziggy

Ziggy is an absolutely wonderful little dog. He is a Miniature Pinscher mix and was born in 2007. He is a neutered male weighing 10 lbs and is housebroken and has a lot of energy. He loves to play with toys and run around the yard.

Ziggy is a great snuggler and likes to sleep under the covers. His tail is always wagging, and he has a great smile.

Meet Alex. He is a Labrador Retriever mix born 12-2007. He is neutered and weighs 62 pounds.

Alex doesn’t know what he did wrong, but somehow he ended up in a shelter — and he didn’t like it there. He was rescued and taken to a foster home with other dogs and has fun running around the yard with them.

Alex is a very good boy, house trained, but is still kind of a puppy and needs to be in his crate when he’s home alone.

Meet Max, a one year old, very sweet cat. Max is up to date on shots and has been altered.
He loves to be held and take naps.

He came to the rescue because he had no home and was living outside. He likes other cats and most all dogs. Max is litter trained.

One word to describe Ali is easy. She is an American Staffordshire Terrier mix and weighs 58lbs.
She is so easy to care for and is a quiet, very well behaved girl and wants to only be near you so that she can give you lots of kisses. She is up to date on shots and has been spayed.

Meet Bagel, a young and medium-sized dog. He is a Pug-Beagle mix and is a nice dog. He gets along with other dogs and cats and is great with kids.

This is a nice dog that is housebroken and has had obedience training. Bagel tries to please everyone and is playfull and happy. He is up to date on shots and has been neutered.

Bombur is a Chow Chow mix. His date of birth is 2003-2005; and he is a neutered male, weighing around 30 lbs.

Bombur LOVES to go for walks, play tug and chase, and having his belly-rubbed. He would prefer a fenced-in yard because he loves to be outside; but lots of walkies would be acceptable.

He is housebroken, good with other dogs and doesn’t need to be crated.

Bombur should not go to a home with children under 12 and will need regular brushing. UTD with shots.

Meet Harmony, a German Shepherd born in 2003. Harmony is a spayed female and weighs 63 pounds. Ahe loves people and really, really wants people who will love to play with her. She even comes with her own tenny ball, but she likes other toys too. She likes people of most all shape and sizes, but she needs older children.

Harmony is housebroken, crate trained, and she is highly energetic and has a special need. She has an eye condition called pannus that happens sometimes with this breed. She will need eye drops every day to keep her eyes healthy.

Other dogs are OK, but Harmony really like peoples better, and it is best if she has no cats living with her.

This week the St. Johns Independent is pleased to introduce a new feature, The Pet Corner. Each week we hope to feature a different pet who needs a new home.  The pets are rescued pets and are all living in foster homes. 

The Animal Placement Bureau is a volunteer foster care network with no paid staff and no sheltering facility.  All of the dogs in their care live with volunteers in their homes.

APB is a no-kill animal welfare agency and is funded solely by private donations and fundraisers and does not receive any state, local or federal funding. Major expenses are the result of the extensive medical care they provide for each dog in their care including worming, vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries. All donations are tax deductible.

APB does have a pet parade every other Sunday at Petco in Frandor. The next one will be held on February 8.  So if you are looking for a pet, please consider one of the pets on our site to brighten up your life. 

It is important that you contact the foster parent — and not the SJ Indy — because only the foster family will have the full information. They would love to talk to you. 

Faith is a sweet, beautiful little girl who is learning how much she loves people.   Faith was found as a stray, and we believe she was a hunting beagle who lived outdoors. Now She is certainly enjoying the newfound comforts of her foster home.

Faith is a very friendly and social girl and wants to be friends with everyone she meets. Sometimes she can be a bit hesitant about trusting new people, especially men.

Faith is a spayed female, weighing 26 pounds.  Her date of birth is 2001.

Faith gets along fabulously with every dog she meets.  She is crate trained and very close to being housebroken.  She loves the outdoors and would like a home with a fenced yard where her beagle nose can investigate all the smells at her leisure.
