Marian B. Rice

Marian B. Rice, who celebrated her 100th birthday May 11, 2003, passed away July 17 in Tucson, Ariz., at the home of her loving caregiver, Constance Taylor.

Marian was born and raised in St. Johns. She attended Beloit University in Wisconsin and the University of Michigan, graduating in 1925 with a B.A. degree in library science. After working in the Public Library of Detroit, she enrolled into the Harper Hospital School of Nursing. She became a registered nurse and worked at the University of Michigan Hospital in Pediatrics.

She enrolled in the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. After graduating she worked for the Cass County Public Health Department. She moved to Petoskey and began a long career with the Charlevoix County Health Department as their county nurse. Many of the Òold-timers,Ó especially on Beaver Island, will remember her as a very strong and caring nurse who acquired many friends throughout the area.

She met and married Walter Rice while in Petoskey. They lived and worked there until their retirements. In the 1960s, Marian and Walter moved to Tucson where both came to love the Southwest. Marian took Spanish classes and Walter continued his love for photography and stamp collecting. They traveled to Mexico several times and thoroughly enjoyed retirement together until Walter's death in 1974.

Her family and friends will well remember Marian's "Noni Stories," which she delighted in telling in a wonderful Irish accent. She will be missed by family, special friend, Tom Hughes, and others who knew her, but Marian will be delighted to be reunited with her soulmate, Walter.

Her ashes will be interred at East Lawn Cemetery in Tucson, with a private graveside service. The only known surviving relatives are her second cousins, Elizabeth Ann Kutsche and Bruce Wm. Brunson. May God rest her soul.
