Kara Nola Olson

Kara Nola Olson passed away February 25, 2004 at the age of 3. She was born in Grand Rapids on May 3, 2000, the daughter of Steven and Nola (Pongrattana) Olson. 

Surviving are her parents, Steve & Nola Olson, brother, Joshua Olson, grandparents, Somnieng and Pheuy Pongrattana and Alfred and Carol Olson, special “grandma”, Dorothy Jean Sirrine, many aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Betty  and Gene Newman, great aunt, Evelyn Olson and special “grandpa” Robert Sirrine. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, February 28, 2004 at the Osgood Funeral Home with the Pastor Tim Nelson from Bridgeway Community Church  officiating. The family will receive friends 1-3 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. 

Marie M. Conley

Marie M. Conley died February 25, 2004, at the age of 77. She was born in Westphalia on August 5, 1926, the daughter of Peter and Eleanora (Fandel) Braun. She worked in the cafeteria for St. Johns Pubic Schools, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and loved watching the grandkids play sports.  She also enjoyed playing golf, bowling and playing cards. Marie married Edgar Conley in Fowler on June 22, 1949 and he survives her. 

Also surviving are her daughters, Deborah (Richard) Irrer of Okemos, Cheryl (Scott) Heibeck and Rebecca Woodhams, all of St. Johns, sons, James (Danette) Conley of Scotts Valley, CA, Kurt (Connie) Conley and Kevin (Sharon) Conley, all of St. Johns, grandchildren, Scott (Colleen), Sterling and Sean Heibeck, Michael and Dana Irrer, Matthew Woodhams, Charron and Mason Conley, Jessica and Nathan Conley, Jordan, Dustin and Austen Conley, great grandchildren, Kade, Colton and Kelsey Heibeck, brothers, William Braun of Fowler, Vince Braun of Muir and Peter (Barb) Braun of Houston, TX, sisters, Geraldine (Leon) Wieber of Fowler and Delores Snitgen of St. Johns and sisters-in-law, Pat Braun of Fowler, Mary Johnson and Arlene (Stuart) Smith, all of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Norman and Paul Braun and sister, Dorothy VanLoon. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 28, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with vigil service prayed at 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hazel Findlay Manor.

Donald E. Watson

watson_donald.jpg (9569 bytes)Donald E. Watson, age 81 of Ovid, Michigan passed away Monday, February 23, 2004, Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, Michigan. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Masonic Services will be held Wednesday Evening at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral Home. Pastor Donald Ruff will officiate with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6-8 and Wednesday 2-8 P.M.

Donald was born on July 25, 1922 in Ovid, Michigan, the son of Ellis and Neva (Baker) Watson. On April 12, 1948 he married Londa Cassady in Ovid, Michigan. Londa died on February 14, 1995. He retired from Clinton Machine in Ovid and he was a farmer. Donald served in the navy during WW II. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the American Legion in Harrison and of the Moose Lodge in Harrison, Michigan.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa & Al Roberts of Ovid, Michigan, his 3 grandsons Michael & Amy Watson of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Ryan Acre of Elsie, Michigan, and Corey Acre of Elsie, Michigan, 1 great granddaughter Hope, and 2 sisters-in-law Carol Watson of Elsie, Michigan, and Shirley Watson of Ovid, Michigan.

He is predeceased by his parents, his wife, and 2 brothers Robert and Richard Watson. Memorials may be made to a local Moose Lodge in memory of Donald. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Pansy B. Hines

Hines-Pansy.jpg (10122 bytes)Pansy B. Hines died February 24, 2004 at the age of 90.  Born March 11, 1913 in Lopez, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Mary (Hunsinger) Loveridge.  Rev. Hines moved to the Ovid area in 1950 and was active in the Spiritual Episcopal Church of Owosso for many years and where she also served as Pastor for several years.  After resigning as Pastor she was active in offices of the Church Board also serving as President for many years.  Rev. Hines transferred her membership to the Spiritual Episcopal Church at Mt. Morris, MI where she was still active.   Rev. Hines has held offices in the National Offices of the Church serving on the Clergy Board as Missionary at Large, District Clergy Person of MI and OH, Appellate Clergy Person for many years and also as Dean of the Church Institute.  

She is survived by two sons, Rodney (JoAnn) Strickland of Vancouver, WA, William (Patricia) Strickland of Selbyville, DE, two grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.  

Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 27, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.  

Benjamin A. “Ben” Platte

Platte-Benjamin.jpg (6596 bytes)Benjamin A. “Ben” Platte passed away February 22, 2004 at the age of 10. He was born in St. Johns on April 29, 1993, the son of Adam and Laurie (Thelen) Platte. He was a 4th grade student at Most Holy Trinity Catholic School but left behind many classmates and friends at Waldron Elementary School. Ben loved eagles; NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, Jr.; fishing; camping; riding his bike and rollerblading. Ben was known for his huge smile and friendly personality. He always cared about other people more than himself and had a great impact on everyone who knew him.  

Surviving are his parents, Laurie and Adam Platte, brother, Mathew Platte, sister, Macy Platte, both at home, grandparents, Stanley and Jane Platte and Eugene and Margie Thelen, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by two cousins, Lee Platte and Zachary Thelen and one uncle, Dean Thelen. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 26, 2004 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with Rosaries prayed at 3 and 8 P.M. Tuesday, 3 P.M. Wednesay and a Vigil Service 8:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Fanconi Anemia Research Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati or Most Holy Trinity School. 

Lee R. Schneider

Lee R. Schneider, Pewamo, MI Age 58, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. He was born on May 17, 1945 in Pewamo the son of Clemens and Rita (Goodman) Schneider. Mr. Schneider was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Pewamo Knights of Columbus Council #8071. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the United States Army, was a member of the Hubbardston American Legion Post, and the Ionia Moose Lodge. He was a Supervisor at General Motors, retiring after 36 years of service, and loved to hunt, fish, camp, and traveling in their 5th Wheel. He was preceded in death by his father, baby brother, Clemens Schneider.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Sharon; children, Glenn (Stacey) Schneider of Grand Ledge, and Heather (Tom) Bomgaars of Plainwell; granddaughter, Ashleigh Bomgaars; mother, Rita Schneider; mother-in-law, Marjorie Widrig of Eastpointe, MI; 3 brothers, LaVern (Joan) Schneider of St. Johns, Roger (Special Friend Sue) Schneider of Pewamo, and Jerome (Mary Jane) Schneider of Pewamo; 3 sisters, Linda (Jerry) Huhn of Portland, Sandy Thelen of Pewamo, and Kathy (Gary) Gay of Davison; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor at 11 AM Monday, February 23, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo with Rite of Committal following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Hubbardston American Legion Post. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Saturday and Sunday. The Rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 PM both days. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund in memory of Mr. Lee R. Schneider. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Antoinette E. Koenigsknecht

Antoinette E. Koenigsknecht, our beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully in her home on February 18, 2004 at the age of 91.  She was born in Westphalia Township, Michigan on March 27, 1912, to William and Margaret (Sontag) Hengesbach.  She was deputy treasurer and treasurer for Dallas Township for 37 years.  Antoinette was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and the Christian Mothers.  She married Leo Koenigsknecht on August 31, 1938 and he preceded her in death June 8, 1989 after 50 years of marriage.  She was also preceded in death by two sons, Louis and infant Leo, Jr. and five brothers, Lawrence, Urban, Sylvester, Tony and Fr. Julius Hengesbach.   

Surviving are her five sons, Fr. William of Lansing, Clare (Judy) of Fowler, Dennis (Bonnie) of Cincinnati, OH, David of Wilson, NY, Brian (Agnes) of Fowler, four daughters, Joan (Mike) Boog of Lyons, Rose (Mack) Martin of Hickory Corners, Judy (Mike) Klein of Pewamo and Eileen (Steve) Feldpausch of Fowler, daughter-in-law, Pat Koenigsknecht of Fowler, 47 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one sister, Loretta Rademacher and special caregiver, Bernice Hengesbach of Fowler.  

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 23, 2004 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. William Koenigsknecht and Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating.  Visitation will be Saturday and Sunday from 9-9 with the family present 2-4 and 7-9 at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with Rosaries prayed at 3 and 8 PM Saturday, 3 PM Sunday and a Vigil Scripture Service 8 PM Sunday.  Memorials may be made to Most Holy Trinity Education Fund or Charity of Donor’s Choice.  

Harold "Barney" Holcomb

Harold "Barney" Holcomb, 70, passed away Feb. 10, 2004, at his home in Pharr, Texas. He was born Aug. 3, 1933 in Harrisville, Mich.

Mr. Holcomb served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He graduated from Ferris State College as a printer. He retired from General Motors in Lansing.

He served as an elder at St. Johns Lutheran Church for 15 years. He loved playing Santa Claus until he retired. He and his wife, Donna, traveled full-time for 10 years in their 5th-wheel motorhome. They loved square dancing, camping and belonging to the Escapees RV Club.

Surviving is his loving wife, Donna Jean Holcomb, whom he married June 21, 1958 in Harrisville. Also surviving are children, Shawn (Jeff) LaMarche of Stevens Point, Wis., and Mark Holcomb of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Dominique Cousinaw of Lockport, N.Y., Jesha LaMarche and Simone LaMarche of Stevens Point; great-granddaughter, Zoe Cousinaw of Lockport, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Holcomb and Alice Bain; sister, Pearl Jackway; brother, Russell Holcomb; grandparents, James McCullough, Maude McCullough Newhouse and Charles Newhouse.

Funeral arrangements were made by Ceballos Funeral Home, McAllen, Texas.

Emery P. Havens

Emery P. Havens, 85, died Feb. 6, 2004, at a rest home in Tampa, Fla. He was born Dec. 21, 1918 in Lansing. He had lived in Dover, Fla., since 1980.

He retired in 1978 from Federal-Mogul in St. Johns where he worked for 31 years. He had served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-47 as a painter.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce (DeGeer) Havens, whom he married Dec. 10, 1960. Also surviving are a step-daughter, Gloria (DeGeer) and Robert Loar of Atlanta, Ga.; son, David Havens of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Feb. 8 in Dover, Fla., with Pastor Boyce Sweat of Dover Baptist Church officiating. His ashes will be taken to Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virg., for military burial this summer.

Charles Youness,  94, died Thursday February 5, 2004. Services will be held Feb. 28, 2004  at 4 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel.

Michael Lynn Hinderline

Michael Lynn Hinderline,  Bath, MI Age 25, died February 17, 2004. Born August 24, 1978 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Michael attended St. Johns Sunnybrook Intermediate School and enjoyed music, having children around him and riding in vehicles. He was preceded in death by his father, George Washington Hinderline, grandparents and brother, Matthew Hinderline.

Surviving are his brothers and sisters, Russell Misner of Portland, Vernon (Kristi) Misner of Palo, Suzette (Dave) Hartman of Jenison, John Hinderline of Vestaburg, Joe (Stephanie) Price of Lansing and Mary (Bill) Woodard of Edmore; Step-father, Doug Wagner and mother, Vicki Wagner, both of Bath.

Memorial Services will be held Friday, February 20, 10 AM at the Bath United Methodist Church, 13777 Main, Bath, MI with the Rev. Tom Truby, Pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Mary Free Bed Clinic, Grand Rapids, MI in memory of Michael. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel.
