Gertrude E. "Gert" Smith

Smith-Gert.jpg (8106 bytes)Gertrude E. "Gert" Smith passed away May 18, 2004 at the age of 70 surrounded by her family after a two year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Fowler on February 14, 1934, the daughter of Arthur and Barbara (Schafer) Fernholz. Everyone loved mom’s roast beef dinners especially her grandchildren. She always opened her home to everyone and enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family. Everyone loved the candy bowl that she kept well stocked. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports and was always there to say "Way to Go" and tell you what a good game you played afterwards. She worked at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in St. Johns for 32 years and absolutely dedicated her professional life to the students and staff. She was a kind and gentle person who always fixed a boo-boo with the care only a mother and grandmother could. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ladies Altar Society and Education Commission, a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Grief Minister and a board member at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Gert married Alan "Tank" Smith on August 20, 1955 in Fowler, and he survives her.
