Rev. Howard A. Simpson

Rev. Howard A. Simpson,  Jr. East Lansing, MI Age 80, died November 20, 2004. Born July 13, 1924 in Bronx, NY. Rev. Simpson received his BS degree from Trinity College, Hartford, CT, attended General Theological Seminary, NY City, NY, LTH--1952, STB--1959, M.DIV--1972, Ordained Deacon NY City, NY June 8, 1952, and ordained to the Priesthood, Clinton, OK on December 10, 1952.

During his ministry, he served various parishes and missions throughout Oklahoma, and later as cannon, Christ Church Cathedral, New Orleans, Rector of St. Johns, MI, St. Anne's, DeWitt, and Trinity Church, St. Clair Shores. He retired from the State of Michigan in 1991, from the Department of Public Health and helped with Sunday supply services at St. Johns Church, St. Johns, MI and other locations throughout Michigan. He volunteered services at All Saints Episcopal Church, East Lansing as needed after retirement from the State of Michigan. Rev. Simpson enjoyed model railroading, model airplanes, golf, fly fishing, Wharton Productions, was an avid reader. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A loving husband and father, surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary; daughter, Ruth Mary (Robert) Ziel of Marquette; 3 sons, Howard A., III (Susan) of McComb Township, Gregory D. of Lansing and Byron J. of DeWitt; 5 grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Friday, December 10, 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 800 Abbott Road, East Lansing with the Rev. Carolyn Stacey, officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the All Saints Memorial Fund or the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674 in memory of Rev. Simpson. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, East Lansing.

Philip Carl Smith

Smith_Carl.jpg (4945 bytes)Philip Carl Smith died Sunday December 5, 2004.  He was born in Dallas Township, Michigan November 25, 1924 the son of Frank and Dora (Werner) Smith. He was a retired farmer and sales manager at Lower Bros. in Ionia. Carl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He married Mildred “Millie” Thelen on May 4, 1948 and she survives him.

Also surviving are 6 daughters, Rosemary (Luke) Koenigsknecht of St. Johns, Kathy (Randy) Schafer, Nancy (Dave) Lawrence of Dewitt, Therese (Dean) Miller of Westphalia, Sharon (John) Mann of Glenview, IL, and Marilyn (David) Heinle of Elmhurst, IL, 5 sons, Dave (Germaine) Smith of Pewamo, Alan (Sharon) Smith of St. Johns, Rick (Maureen) Smith of Wilmette, IL, Paul (Beth) Smith of Westphalia, and Brian (Stephany) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, 36 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and son-in-law, Greg Lounds of St. Johns. One sister, Florence Halfmann of Westphalia and one brother, Albert Smith of Pewamo. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Lounds, two sisters, Julia Simon and Dorothy Wieber, and two brothers, Reynold & Roman Smith.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church,126 East Street, Pewamo with the Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 West Ionia, Fowler, with rosaries being prayed 3:00 & 8:00 P.M. Monday, 3:00 P.M. Tuesday and a vigil service at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund, Pewamo, or to the family.

Alice G. Cole

Cole_Alice.jpg (4471 bytes)Alice G. Cole died Saturday, December 4, 2004 at the age of 73. Born in St. Johns on June 25, 1931, she was the daughter of Clare and Ella (Blunt) Dilts and married Robert W. Cole on June 27, 1953. Alice lived all of her life in St. Johns, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and worked at Allaby & Brewbaker Insurance for over 51 years. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (December 2001), and one brother, Richard Dilts.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda George of St. Johns, one son, Dave (Kathleen) Cole of Cedar Springs, four grandchildren, Carly Williams of St. Johns, Melanie George (fiancee, Kurt Moritz) Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Robert W. Cole II (fiancee, Lauren Reed) of Mobile, AL. Jessica Cole of Cedar Springs, two great grandchildren, Kiana and Austin Williams; one sister, Phyllis (Marvin) Rhynard of Lansing; sister-in-law, Jean Dilts of St. Johns; special friend, Terri Davis and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Osgood Funeral Home,104 E. Cass Street, St. with the Reverend Dr. Thomas Truby officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, MI 48915 in memory of Bob & Alice Cole.

Betty Heathman

Betty D. Heathman died Saturday, December 4, 2004 at the age of 72. She was born December 12, 1931 in Savannah, Georgia the daughter of Cecil and Edith (Sykes) Cannon. Betty married Edward (Spud) Heathman April 11, 1953 and he preceded her in death on January 22, 2000.

Betty is survived by one daughter, Sandy (Bob) Rasdale of St. Johns; three sons, Larry (Diane) of Ramsay, MI; Gary (Dawn) of St. Johns; Neal (Sherry Warner) of St. Johns; ten grandchildren, Larry Jr., Richard, Daniel, Nicole, Mitchell, Brian, Joshua, Jill, Andrew, and Desiree; one great grandson, Reed Parker Heathman; one brother, Cecil Cannon Jr. of Texas and long time companion, Princess the Labrador.

Private funeral services were held. Memorials may be made to Great Lakes Hospice, 1000 E. Sturgis St. Suite #8 St. Johns, MI 48879. Arrangements and service was provided by the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Joseph S. Trefil

Joseph S. Trefil,  Perrinton, MI Age 77, passed away Friday, December 3, 2004 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing. He was born June 19, 1927 in Perrinton, the son of Thomas and Winifred (Sage) Trefil. Joe married Phyllis DeMarais on May 4, 1957. He worked with MoorMan Feeds for 31 years. Joe was a member of the Mark Daniels VFW Post #1735. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, gardening, fishing and hunting.

Joe is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and children, Duane (Nancy) Trefil of Perrinton, Daryl (Tammy) Trefil of Maple Rapids, Darwin (Dorothy) Trefil of Perrinton, Derwin "Pete" (Kelly) Trefil of Perrinton, Darrin "Buzz" (Tammie) Trefil of Perrinton, Dawn (Dave) Oistad of Hubbardston and Donna (Robb) Coleman of Elsie, 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also three brothers, John (Evelyn) Trefil of Warren, Tom (Barbara) Trefil of St. Johns, Bobby (Sara) Trefil of Sumner and three sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Perrinton, Nancy (Don) Smith of Ithaca and June Swan of DeWitt; one sister-in-law, Joyce Trefil of Perrinton and brother-in-law, Bob Whitford of Rapid River. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, DeAnna Trefil, two brothers, Danny and Frank Trefil, and sister, Gertrude Whitford.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 6, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church with Father Jules Spleet officiating. Interment will be in Fulton Center Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Dodge Funeral Home, Middleton and 2-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church with a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Prayer Vigil. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin DePorres Altar Society or Fulton School Athletics.

Sylvester A. Thelen

thelen_sylvester.jpg (8618 bytes)Sylvester A. Thelen,  Westphalia, MI Age 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 13, 1916 in Westphalia the son of Joseph and Theresa (Rademacher) Thelen. He lived his entire life in Westphalia. Mr. Thelen served on the the Westphalia School Board for 20 years and the Pewamo-Westphalia Board of Education during the consolidation of the two districts. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia, the St. Joseph Society, and the Catholic Order of Forresters, having served in several offices in the local court, 16 years on the state court, 4 years as its State Chief Ranger. In 1964 he was employed by the High Court as Organizer and served until his retirement on February 1, 1981.

On April 25, 1939 he married Irene Wieber to this union were born 1 daughter, Elaine Fox, 5 sons, Michael (Pat) Thelen, Charles (Sue) Thelen, Steve (Mary Lou) Thelen, Alan (Mary) Thelen, and Luke Thelen; 21 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; brother Norman Thelen. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, son-in-law, Gerald Fox; 4 brothers, John, Henry, Walter, and Raymond, 4 sisters, Louise, Pauline, Mary and Rose and several sister and brother-in-laws. On November 23, 1985 he married Esther Bedenbender, she passed away on February 14, 2003.

Surviving are 1 stepson, Jack (Nancy) Bedenbender, 7 step daughters, Patricia (Francis) Leik, Jan Maxwell, Betty (Joe) Peters, Nancy (Gary) Schrauben, Susan (Jon) Arendsen, Debi Bedenbender, and Sheila (Steve) Kemp; numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law Arnold Nurenburg and Edwin Schueller.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor, Sylvester's brother-in-law, Fr. Donald Wieber and Msgr. Sylvester Fedewa at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 4, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. both days. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Fr. Al Miller Trust Fund, The Ark or Hospice of Clinton Co. in memory of Mr. Thelen. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Richard A. Kloeckner

Richard A. Kloeckner,  Portland, MI Age 82, passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2004. He was born on February 15, 1922 in Westphalia the son of Mathias and Mary (Belen) Kloeckner. Dick was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #2168, and a 4th Degree member of the Fr. Godez Assembly. He retired from the Consumers Power Company after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Kloeckner; 3 brothers, Hilary, Arthur, and Harold Kloeckner; 3 sisters, Vera Spitzley, Alma Thelen, and Pauline Williams.

Surviving are his wife, Mary A. Kloeckner; daughter, Sue (Scott) Thelen of Westphalia; 2 granddaughters, Krysta and Marissa; 6 sisters, Margaret Masseau of Lansing, Laurine Sebrell of Lansing, Winifred Thelen of Westphalia, Germaine Walker of Lansing, Joann (Norman) Cook of Pewamo, and Patricia (DJ) Mace of Lansing; brother, Donald (friend Peggy) Kloeckner of Holt; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 4, 2004 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Fr. Larry King, Pastor, presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 p.m. Friday.
