Thomas B. Knight Thomas B. Knight died
Saturday, June 2, 2007 at the age of 61. He was born February 4, 1946 the son of William
and Audra (Hettler) Knight and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He was a graduate of
Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights
of Columbus, and served in the Michigan National Guard. He was an avid golfer and bowler
and a huge fan of Detroit Redwing Hockey. Tom was the owner/ operator of Hair World Barber
Shop in St. Johns. On February 10, 1978 he married Linda Freund and she survives him.
Also surviving are three daughters, Shelly (Robert) Wilkie
and Nicole (Alex) Orta all of St. Johns, Missy (Piet) VanZant of Livonia; one son, Josh
(Kristin) Knight of Grand Ledge; nine grandchildren; two aunts, Dorothy Knight of St.
Johns and Kay Shaull of Grand Ledge and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his
parents.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, June 7,
2007 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Rev. Fr.
Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 11:00 am until
service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of
donors choice.
Edgar B. Prowant
Edgar B. Prowant, age 71, died suddenly on March 16, 2007
at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, while spending the day there with his stepson and
grandson. He was born on March 29, 1935. See full obituary.
A loving tribute to Edgar B. Prowant will be held on Sunday
June 10, 2007 at the UAW hall from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. located at 117 W. Walker Street, St.
Johns.
David J. Decess Jr.
David J. Decess Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL (Formerly of Lansing) died May 28, 2007, at the
age of 37. He was born in Lansing on March 1, 1970, the son of David Decess Sr. and Nancy
(West) Gardenhouse.
Surviving are his parents, Nancy Gardenhouse and David and Peggy Decess; sisters, Arminda
(Tim) Booth, Kimber Gardenhouse and Jennifer Gardenhouse; daughter, Marissa Decess and
son, Austin Decess. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral
Homes in Maple Rapids, MI followed with burial at Sowle Cemetery. The family
will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the
form of memorials to a charity of the family's choice.
Donald D. Hambleton
Donald D. Hambleton died on June 2, 2007 at the age of 87.
Born in St. Johns, Michigan February 9, 1920, he was the son of Ervin and Eloise
(Reynolds) Hambleton. Don was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School and lived in the
Lansing Area since 1965. He was a retired baker, consultant/manager at the MSU Bakery, a
member of the American Society of Bakers Engineers and the American Legion of Haslett. On
August 29, 1945 he married June Hershberger in Hagerstown, MD and she survives him.
Also surviving are two sons, David (Rosemary) Hambleton and
William (Rhonda) Hambleton all of Lansing; five daughters, Sharon (James) Seeley of
Bellevue, Nebraska, Nancy (Bruce) Marshall of Lansing, Susan Hambleton of St. Johns,
Pamela (Carl) Beach of Sarasota, Florida and Annette (Nick) Garland of Washington Court
House, Ohio; eleven grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
his parents, two sisters, two brothers and 1 great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, June 6 at
the Osgood
Funeral Home in St. Johns with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Burial will
follow at South Bingham Cemetery. The families will receive friends 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. at
the funeral home preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting

Todd M. Humphrey
Todd M. Humphrey 47, of Elk Rapids died suddenly May 21, 2007. Todd was born on September
11, 1959 in St. Johns, the son of Myron "Mike" and Wanda (Upham) Humphrey. He
was raised in St. Johns and graduated from St. Johns high School in 1978.
Todd spent all of his summers on Birch Lake where he developed a love of swimming and
water skiing. Eventually he moved to Elk Rapids and called "Up North " his home.
Most of his professional career was spent working for Tom's Market. He loved working with
people and always had a smile for everyone. Todd loved nature and the great outdoors. He
enjoyed biking, golf, hiking, and hunting. He was a longtime member of the Elk Rapids
Sportsman's Club. Todd is survived by his mother Wanda Humphrey of Elk Rapids; sister Sue
(Larry) Flowers of Williamsburg; brother Randy (Melanie) Humphrey of Estes Park Col.;
seven nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews.
Todd was preceded in death by his father Mike Humphrey and his grandparents; Leonard and
Olive Humphrey and Ervin and Velma Upham.
A Memorial Service was held Friday May 25, 2007 at 11 a.m. at The First Presbyterian
Church in Elk Rapids, with Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein officiating. Memorials may be
given in Todd's name to The First Presbyterian Church, 404 Spruce Street, Elk Rapids or
the Antrim Animal Shelter, 3366 B, S. Derenzy Rd., Bellaire MI 49615. Arrangements have
been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes, Elk Rapids.
Edward Thomas Murphy
Edward Thomas Murphy, age 60, of Ovid, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2007, at the VA
Hospital, Ann Arbor. Ed was a lifelong mechanic and truck driver.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Jennings-Lyons Funeral
Chapel, Owosso. Friends may meet with the family prior to the service from noon to 2 p.m.
at the funeral home.
Iola F. Slagell
Iola F. Slagell died June 2, 2007. She was born
July 19, 1920 in Sterling, Illinois the daughter of Charles and Pearl (McCullough)
Nunemaker. She was a member of Mint City Free Methodist Church where she taught Sunday
School for many years. Iola also served on the City of St. Johns Election Board. On
November 15, 1936, she married Ollie Slagell, and he preceded her in death December 27,
1992.
She is survived by one son, Russell (Pat) Slagell, one
daughter, Verna (Gary) Peters, of St. Johns, five grandchildren, Bonnie (Derrick) Jacobs,
Brenda (David) Carter, Greg (Jan) Slagell, Heather Farrell, and Brent (Kristen) Cleland,
seven great grandchildren, Matthew and Meghann Farrell and Daniel and Moriah Slagell,
Caden and Blake Jacobs, and Gabrial Cleland. In addition to her husband, Iola was preceded
in death by a daughter, Donna Slagell and two sisters, Vanora Nunemaker and Irene Diehm.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the Osgood Funeral
Home, burial at Collier Cemetery-Washington Township with Pastor Krag Johnson
officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.
Monday at the funeral home.
John O. Theuerkauf
John O. Theuerkauf, 79, of Menominee, Mich., entered his
heavenly home on May 29, 2007. He was born and raised on Elmbrook Farm, the son of Ada
(Schilawski) and Otto Theuerkauf.
He graduated with a Master's Degree from Michigan State University in 1949, majoring in
Agriculture and Education. After teaching agriculture for three years in Powers, Mich., he
moved to St. Johns and worked in the St. Johns Public School System until his retirement
in 1983. In addition to teaching a variety of subjects, he served as cross-country coach
and taught driver education. He was married to Patricia (Walker) in 1950 and together they
had three sons and one daughter. In 1971 he wed Jane Hayhoe. A 60 year cancer survivor,
John was an active member of the Lutheran church and the Lion's Club of St. Johns, Mich.
He enjoyed his retirement years fishing during the summer in Elk Rapids, Mich., and
wintering in Ruskin, Fla.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jane Hayhoe; and her children: Kim, DeAnn and
Todd; his sons: Jim (Colleen), Joe (Sharon) and John (Sue); his daughter, Judy (Eric)
Armocida; sister-in-law, Dorothy Theuerkauf; eight grandchildren, and numerous nieces,
nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Otto and Ada;
brothers: Carl, Roy and Harry; and sister, Alice (Matt Mayer).
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Christ
Lutheran Church, 613 11th Avenue, Menominee, Mich., followed by a funeral service at 2
p.m. with the Rev. Fred Stubenvoll, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Birch Creek
Cemetery.
Carol Marie George
Carol Marie George died May 30, 2007, at the age of 45. She was born in Owosso on April
24, 1962, the daughter of Floyd and June (Hamp) Byrnes and was a care giver.
Surviving are her daughters, Amanda (Brian) Hofacker, Christina George, all of Elsie, and
Hillary (boyfriend Tim Hyatt) George of Ovid, four grandchildren, Kane, Lillian and Ozzy
Hofacker, and Anniaka George, mother, June Byrnes of Ovid, sisters, Mary (Richard) Criner
of Harrison, Liz (Bob) Waltz of Laingsburg, and Margaret (Kim) Williams of Ovid,
boyfriend, Kevin Hoag of St. Johns, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her father and brother, Henry Schuetz, Jr.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 4, 2007 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes
with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.
Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of
memorials to her family.
